Unit Therapist

Children, Youth, and Family Services

Annual Salary Range: $64,084.80 - $76,460.80

Job Summary: This Unit Therapist will provide individual and group therapy to justice-involved youth in a secure setting. This position is essential to coaching and training Youth Correctional Officers and community partners in facilitating skills groups, as well as evaluating youth competency and progress daily. The Unit Therapist will also provide substance use education and treatment to youth in care.

Position Duties:

  • Clinical Evaluation. Deliver psychosocial and AODA assessments to children, adolescents, and their families in crisis situations due to emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric difficulty. Initiate requests for court-ordered and recommended services, phone calls, agency information, etc.
  • Clinical Services. Deliver individual and group treatment services and crisis-focused treatment to youth in the detention center. Serve as a referral resource for families to obtain follow-up mental health and substance use services.
  • Treatment Services. Serve as a consultant to and provide liaison services with Human Service Workers, case managers, and treatment staff. Assist Crisis Services by utilizing Wraparound, Comprehensive Community Services (CCS), and other identified program funds to purchase needed community resources and services.
  • Education and Training. Educate, teach, and train mental health professionals and paraprofessionals. Provide coaching and support to paraprofessional mental health aides or assistants working with the crisis team.
  • Documentation. Prepare case notes, treatment plans, and other documentation.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Current resident of Wisconsin
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's License and access to a reliable insured vehicle; maintained throughout employment.
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or in a closely related field is required.
  • At least one (1) year of recent experience working as a Youth Psychotherapist, Youth Counselor required.
  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25lbs as needed.
  • Certification as a Social Worker in the State of Wisconsin preferred.
  • May be required to work weekends occasionally, as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of and skill in the application of ethics, theories, methods, practices, treatments and techniques of psychiatric social work and counseling; oral and written communication skills; knowledge of health services providing care to children and adolescents; knowledge of community resources in the area of health and social services and the ability to utilize them effectively; knowledge of mental disorders and diseases; knowledge of laws governing mental commitments; skill in interviewing patients and family members and accurately assessing their needs; ability to work as a member of a mental health or health care team; ability to work with people of all social, economic and educational levels; ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with staff, patients, families, and agencies.
