Corrections Manager - Sheriff

Full-time, Hourly

Hourly Range: $39.73 - $51.66


Job Summary: Management and supervision of Jail Operations, to include supervision of Lieutenants, Sergeants, Officers, and Clerical staff in all areas of the Jail. To ensure compliance with policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and staffing levels. To act as an assistant and/or adjutant to the Jail Director or Deputy Director as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Jail Operations: Supervision and oversight of Jail Operations, to include Jail Records & Property Room. Liaison with Courts, Municipal Law Enforcement, District Attorney's office, other facilities. Conduct occupants' disciplinary & grievance appeals. Ensure efficient and effective operation of the facility.
  • Manage, Supervise, Mentor, Train, Discipline and Evaluate staff: Mentor, train, lead Lieutenants daily. Hold supervisors accountable for the security of the complex & the well-being of occupants at MCJ. Ensure the staff follows all federal, state, and local Jail standards. Supervise and manage Jail Records. Evaluate, discipline, and encourage staff.
  • Create and Enforce Agency Policy, County, State and Federal Rules: Enforce agency policy/procedures. Analyze current data and standards. Recommend and institute positive changes. Enforce county/agency rules, Civil Service rules. County AMOPP's and Human Resources' guidelines. Abide by state and federal rules.
  • Facilitator: Meet with members of the community, correctional entities, county department staff, Court services representatives and others. Schedule and delegate tours of the Milwaukee County Jail. Oversee and manage Jail Records and Property Room.
  • Administrative duties: Review and submit documentation of staff commendations and discipline. Assist with budgeting and scheduling. Review and approve timesheets.
  • Computer, Report Writing and Public Speaking: Utilize data sources to create informative reports and presentations. Possess advanced computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office, RMS, CMS, WebFocus, Dayforce, TIME system, CORE, OnBase, and Homewav.
  • Professional Development: Complete agency training: in-person and online. Attend seminars. Take available opportunities to grow professionally and continually develop and hone leadership skills.
  • Training/Education and Staff Development: Engage in planning of staff cross training and In-service training. Facilitate training on-site and off-site for support staff. Oversee the development of proper training in Milwaukee County Jail specilaity areas: Jail Records, Classification, Central Intake Unit, Occupant Worker Program, Special Projects, etc.
  • Oversee Contracts: Communicate with vendors regarding agency/occupant issues or needs, equipment or service failures, success, and upgrades.
  • Occupant Interaction: Make high level safety and security decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be resident of Wisconsin
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Driver's License required at time of appointment and must be maintained during employment
  • At least three (3) years' experience in a Correctional setting required
  • At least one (1) year experience as a Lieutenant or equivelant rank in a Correctional or law enforcement setting required
  • Previous experience with Tasers, OC spray and communication radios required
  • CPR certification required
  • Taser certification required
  • LESB Certification preferred (must be obtained within one year of employment)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the laws and rules pertaining to the operation of Judicial System, Corrections, and Law Enforcement; knowledge of the procedures used in supervising the custody of occupants; knowledge of approved Use of Force, oleoresin capsicum, lethal and non-lethal weapons and emergency equipment; knowledge of the principles of criminal justice and their application to occupant custody; knowledge of how to maintain discipline among the officers, employees, occupants, and visitors and methods used in preventing unauthorized persons from entering and leaving secure areas; ability to interpret the laws and rules; ability to organize work and develop work methods; ability to perform repetitive work without loss of equanimity, patience, or courtesy, to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations, and to retain emotional stability; ability to work effectively with others. Ability to use safely and properly use vehicles, tasers, OC spray, radios, computers, and general office equipment. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs.
