Purpose

The Engineering Technicians will be assigned to the environmental section and will work both in the field and in the office collecting, analyzing, and preparing data related to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stormwater regulations and the City's general sanitary discharge permit.

Eligible candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on the highest-level eligible list for which they qualify.

Essential Functions

  • Field screen storm sewers, outfalls, and roadside ditches to determine the presence of dry weather flow; estimate flow rate, take samples, and perform tests.
  • Prepare, install, and maintain flow recorders and similar monitoring equipment in sanitary and storm manholes.
  • Periodically download data from the sanitary and storm manhole monitors.
  • Perform the required checks on the City's Surcharge Level Indicators and obtain electric meter readings generated by the City's bypass pumping stations after certain rain events.
  • Prepare and update various charts, maps, graphs, drawings, and databases.
  • Perform duties related to the downspout disconnection program, stormwater management plan recertifications, and other programs within the Environmental Engineering Section.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job including standing, walking, twisting, bending, and climbing stairs.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work, including moving equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance, exerting up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 120 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to perform outdoor work in variable weather conditions and confined spaces.
  • Ability to see colors (cannot have color vision deficiency).
  • Ability to work safely in roadways.

Minimum Requirements

Engineering Technician I:

  1. Successful completion of high school level or post-secondary algebraANDgeometry.
  2. Valid driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Engineering Technician II:

  1. Successful completion of high school level or post-secondary algebra AND geometry.
  2. Two years of experience as an Engineering Technician I or full-time experience performing environmental monitoring and sampling or closely related field work.
  3. Valid driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology.
  • GIS (Geographic Information Systems) experience.

TECHNICAL

  • Knowledge and experience with computer programs such as CADD systems (MicroStation or AutoCAD) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to calculate and understand mathematics, applying algebraic and geometric concepts.
  • Ability to observe and document descriptions of work.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical job-related documents.
  • Ability to learn and use delicate instruments to collect various samples.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate throughout the City of Milwaukee

Current Salary

Engineering Technician I:

The current salary range (PR 3PN) is$59,780- $77,225annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is$61,328-$79,541.

Engineering Technician II:

The current salary range (PR 3QN) is$64,118- $83,402annually, and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is$66,042-$85,905.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESSwill be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
