Job Summary

This position is responsible for the management of all aspects of income tax accounting, reporting, and forecasting for Health Care Service Corporation and its subsidiaries.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manage the accurate preparation of the annual consolidated and separate income tax provisions for HCSC and its subsidiaries (under ASC 740 and SSAP 101), as well as monthly tax entries, reconciliations, related tax disclosures, and tax projections.
  • Manage the income tax forecasting model/process and prepare the income tax forecast in collaboration with Financial Strategy and Planning.
  • Review FIN 48 and Uncertain Tax Positions (UTP) analysis and ensure accurately reflected within financial statements and tax footnotes.
  • Manage and ensure appropriate internal controls related to income taxes for HCSC and applicable subsidiaries.
  • Oversee the implementation, maintenance, and automation of systems used in the income tax provision process to continually improve tax functions (tax provision software tool, etc.).
  • Work closely with independent auditors.
  • Research tax law changes, regulations, rulings, etc. which might affect HCSC and Subsidiaries and determine income tax accounting impacts.
  • Provide technical analysis and guidance to management on income tax accounting implications of federal and state tax legislation and accounting developments.
  • Ensure tax function provides timely and accurate income tax accounting updates to subsidiary management.
  • Support the HCSC Tax Planning team and management on tax accounting impacts associated with mergers, acquisitions, investments, and other significant business transactions.
  • Collaborate with the HCSC Tax Planning team on identification and development of tax planning opportunities including modeling of financial statement impact.
  • Supervise and mentor tax professionals assisting with the income tax accounting process and related responsibilities.
  • Participate in special studies and projects.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
* Bachelor Degree in Accounting with a CPA designation or Master Degree in Tax.
* 10 years of tax experience with 8 years of life/non-life insurance tax experience and 5 years proven supervisory experience.
* Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and local income tax law in addition to an understanding of Statutory Accounting Principles and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
* Leadership ability with sound decision-making talent.
* Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
* Advanced analytical, organizational, and project management abilities.

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Expertise knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) income tax accounting under ASC 740.
  • Advanced degree in Taxation preferred.
  • Knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP) including income tax accounting under SSAP 101.
  • Experience in insurance company taxation principles including health, P&C, and life.
  • Strong technical skillset including the use and development of tax provision software and other data automation tools.
  • Strong track record of positive impacts to an organization's income tax accounting process.
