The University of New Mexico's Office for Academic Affairs seeks applicants for the position of Sr. Communications & Marketing Manager. The Senior Communications and Marketing Manager will report to the Provost's Chief of Staff, with a dotted line to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer in UCAM. This role will be responsible for developing and maintaining effective and strategic communication methods between the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) and University Communication and Marketing (UCAM), as well as marketing professionals within Colleges and Schools and Academic Affairs units.

The successful candidate will be able to partner effectively with University leadership, prioritize multiple tasks, take a proactive approach to work assignments, and take initiative in anticipation of future plans and needs of the OAA. This position requires excellent writing, research, editorial, and overall communications skills, savvy judgment, and utmost discretion. The ideal candidate is a diplomatic, articulate, and tactful communicator with superb attention to detail and a history of high-level project execution.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the overall strategic communications and marketing strategy for the OAA in close partnership with and guidance of the leadership team, including written, verbal, and multimedia messaging.
  • Prepare and share a variety of communications internal and external to the University, including announcements, memos, briefings, presentations, with a focus on enhancing the engagement and impact of the OAA and its sub-units.
  • Work closely with the other university departments to gather information and highlight academic achievements, research, and other initiatives.
  • Monitor and analyze major issues in higher education, public policy, and popular culture, as well as ongoing developments across our campuses in order to appropriately address these issues in communications.
  • Draft and/or review remarks, letters, and communications materials prepared for the OAA including those drafted by other offices, and ensure that they are accurate, appropriate, and carefully proofed.
  • Support special projects for the OAA as directed.
  • Coordinate strategic content development with academic unit communications and marketing staff; this includes building and sustaining relationships with colleagues in offices of university leadership, faculty, staff, and other constituents to fuel and inform communications materials.
  • In close coordination with the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer (CMCO), develop crisis communication plans and protocols, providing guidance and support during challenging situations. Act as a liaison between the Provost's Office and other university units during crisis communication efforts. Basic relevant FEMA training will be required.

Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience and excellence in writing, editing, proofreading, data literacy, and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to write for diverse audiences, provide and receive concise feedback, and approach work diplomatically.
    Demonstrated experience and excellence in public relations and marketing.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and storytelling skills, and thorough knowledge of editorial style guidelines, with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to integrate disparate and fragmented content and processes across departments.
  • Effective organizational, time management, planning and project management skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and processes, and set, manage, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Proven ability to be self-motivated, highly collaborative, and flexible in managing multiple high-level priorities to deliver high quality work product in multiple communications mediums.
  • Ability to be a creative, resourceful, flexible, and a team player with highly developed interpersonal skills.
    Discretion and high-level accountability for confidential information.
  • Working knowledge of issues, challenges, and emerging trends in higher education.
  • Capacity to structure and execute short- and long-term communication strategies aligning with academic initiatives and mission and vision encapsulated within the UNM 2040 framework
