Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division is looking for multiple skilled and creative Scientific Engineering Associates to be part of our dynamic team at the Photon Science Development (PSD) group.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,600 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities - including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others - offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!

These positions will be filled at Level 1 or 2 depending on business needs and the skills, knowledge, and experience of the candidate.

Level 1 Essential Responsibilities:

These roles will have a particular emphasis and will operate in one or more of the following areas:

  • Automation, Robotics, Mechatronics, and Controls: Engage in the development of autonomous experimental systems focusing on automation, controls, and robotics.
  • Experimental Sample Environments: Create unique experimental sample environments, simulating various conditions from deep Earth to deep Space, ensuring sample integrity throughout processes.
  • Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) Cryogenic Systems: Develop and maintain UHV cryogenic systems with nano-positioning capabilities and closed-cycle liquid helium systems.
  • High-Pressure Gas and Liquid Flow Systems: Contribute to the development of systems involving high-pressure gas and liquid flows, with microfabrication and microfluidics components.

Additionally, you will:

  • Contribute to the support of scientific research at the Advanced Light Source by developing, commissioning, and upgrading beamlines, endstations, scientific instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and computer control systems.
  • Interact productively in a team environment, taking on both leading and supporting roles, collaborating with scientists, engineers, and mechanical/electrical technicians, and others.
  • Document projects and disseminate information to colleagues.
  • Practice Integrated Safety Management (ISM) in all aspects of your work, and work under the controls, training, and authorizations of all Work Planning & Control Activities to which you are assigned.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and implement relevant Laboratory, Division, and Program Conduct of Operations and Quality Assurance policies and procedures.

Additional Level 2 Essential Responsibilities:

* Manage and implement Research & Development (R&D) projects from beginning to end, to solve a wide range of difficult technical problems and improve the operation of instruments or experiments.

* Requires less supervision and includes more independence in the determination of approach to solutions than Level 1

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 4+ years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 2+ years of experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Experience in one or more areas of robotics, automation, and controls, such as coding/programming skills, control systems, system automation, robotics and manipulation, data acquisition and prototyping
    • Experience with developing or using laboratory setups and/or sample environments for experiments, potentially including familiarity with extreme sample environments such as high temperature/pressure
    • Experience working with cryogenic systems in a UHV and vibration sensitive environment, including systems that cool to below 10K.
    • Experience with systems involving high pressure gas and liquid flows, with associated work in microfabrication and microfluidics
  • Experience in managing and implementing R&D projects, including planning, scheduling, and coordinating resources.
  • Implementing safety controls and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Ability to work independently in a diverse scientific research environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new skills and techniques effectively.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including documenting, presenting, and summarizing results.
  • Knowledge and experience in CAD design.
  • Hands-on experience in equipment building and assembly.
  • Experience in designing, operating, and maintaining various types of instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Additional for Level 2:

  • Deeper technical proficiency in the areas outlined for Level 1.
  • More advanced proficiency in skills for instrument design, including for example CAD and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Ability to work well on interdisciplinary projects, including collaboration with both scientific and engineering staff.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with synchrotron facilities and related techniques.
  • Machine shop experience.
  • Knowledge of Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) techniques and practices.
  • Experience in clean environments and extreme environments such as high temperature/pressure and cryogenic systems

Notes:

  • This posting will remain open until filled
  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • If hired at a level 1:
    • This position is expected to pay $80,784-$101,016, which fits within the full salary range of $80,784-$136,368 for the N50.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • If hired at a level 2:
    • This position is expected to pay $96,684-$120,864, which fits within the full salary range of $96,684-$163,188 for the N50.2. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, and aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
    • Work is performed onsite in laboratory and office settings, including in the Advanced Light Source, a particle accelerator.
    • The ALS operates our accelerator up to 24/7 and there may be times when work is necessary outside of typical business hours.
