JOB TITLE: Visitor Services Associate (Part-Time)

Visitors experience 400 years of history through groundbreaking exhibitions, immersive films, and thought-provoking conversations among renowned historians and public figures at the New-York Historical Society, New York's first museum. A great destination for history since 1804, the Museum and the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library convey the stories of the city and nation's diverse populations, expanding our understanding of who we are as Americans and how we came to be.
JOB SUMMARY
The New-York Historical Society is seeking part-time Visitor Services Associates for its Visitor Services department. Visitor Services Associates staff New-York Historical's admissions and membership desk, coat check, auditorium, switchboard and call center in addition to other related tasks. Candidates must be available to work at least one weekend day per week plus availability to work on holidays when the museum is open to the public. This role is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New-York Historical and Local 2110, UAW.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Sells museum admissions and memberships to visitors;
  • Accurately maintains a cash drawer during their shift;
  • Assists and answers questions from visitors;
  • Helps explain and enforce health and safety procedures;
  • Attends and operates the coat room;
  • Processes visiting guests who have meetings with staff;
  • Answers the main switchboard phone and accurately transfers calls;
  • Distributes assistive listening devices and other exhibition aids related to ADA accessibility;
  • Additional duties as requested.
REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or GED required; Associates or Bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred;
  • 1 year customer service/cashier experience, preferably in a museum/arts setting;
  • Computer skills;
  • High level of verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to interact with customers, coworkers and vendors in a personable and engaging manner.

The employee may be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time and lift objects over their head.
COMPENSATION
Salary: $21.50/hour
