Position Title Manager, Visitor Screening (Security)

Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Security department is seeking a full-time Manager, Visitor Screening. The Manager is responsible for supervising the visitor screening process, including use of screening technology and guards assigned to this function.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervise Museum Attendant Guards assigned to visitor screening duty.
  • Respond to all emergency incidents as assigned.
  • Monitor vendor activity at entrances.
  • Regular floor supervision, which includes assigning guards to posts, supervision of guards, response to alarms and security incidents and preparation of Incident Reports.
  • Perform work schedules determined by the operating needs of assigned watch.
  • Operate the Museum's visitor screening system and conduct necessary systems checks prior to opening.
  • Ensure security and safety of visitors and employees.
  • Specialized screening of active federal, state and local law enforcement entering the building.
  • Respond to visitor questions about the screening procedure.
  • Monitor visitor lines to minimize entry wait time.
  • Direct and/or conduct physical bag checks when the screening technology indicates an alarm condition.
  • Other security-related duties as assigned.

The expected salary range for the Manager, Visitor Screening is $65,000/annual - $69,600/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 15 years of law enforcement experience.
  • Possess a current NYS Armed Security Guard Registration.
  • Possess or be willing to acquire a Fire & Life Safety Director Certification within 6 months from the date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Previous management experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:
      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
