System Safety Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Systems Safety Engineer to join our Lunar Program Fluids & Propulsion team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and performing system safety engineering tasks critical to the design review process. The role involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the safety and reliability of our lunar program's fluids and propulsion systems.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and perform engineering activities to prepare for the Critical Design Review (CDR), including:
    • Conduct Subsystem Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) using FTA tools (PTC Windchill and Saphire) to update and complete analysis for design reviews.
    • Analyze Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs) at the Fluids & Propulsion subsystem level, updating FHAs as the design evolves.
    • Update Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA) based on the most up-to-date materials and diagrams.
    • Conduct Common Cause Assessments (CCA) to validate system independence claims.
    • Provide guidance on Human Error Analysis, potentially leading to Hazards and Operability studies (HAZOPs) or Human Error Tolerance Assessments.
    • Prepare Architecture Safety Assessment (ASA) Reports to identify and allocate safety requirements within the proposed system architecture.
  • Support development and verification efforts by:
    • Reviewing and updating hazard sheets, ensuring proper documentation of mitigation steps.
    • Coordinating the closure of mitigation plans, tracking actions via project management tools.
    • Developing plans and coordinating completion of system and subsystem safety analysis.
    • Ensuring traceability between system functions, requirements, and safety artifacts.
    • Assisting in verification and validation of safety and reliability requirements.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in system safety engineering, preferably in aerospace or related industries.
  • Proficiency in system safety analysis techniques and tools, including Fault Tree Analysis, Hazard Analysis, and FMECA.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with project management tools such as JIRA and Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to aerospace safety and reliability.
