Job Description

Berkeley Lab is on the lookout for a Quantum Network Modeling and Simulation Developer to join our pioneering QUANT-NET project. If you are brimming with creativity and technical skills, this is your chance to dive into the cutting-edge world of quantum research.

This position will be at the forefront of crafting quantum network models and scalable applications, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in distributed quantum computing. You will play a pivotal role in achieving our goal of establishing a three-node quantum computing network between Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley, connected via an entanglement swapping over optical fiber, all orchestrated by a quantum network protocol stack. Responsibilities will include implementing fundamental components of distributed quantum computing and quantum repeaters, such as teleporting a controlled-NOT gate between two distant trapped-ion nodes.

As part of our dynamic, multi-organization team, you'll be at the epicenter of R&D excellence- integrating the latest quantum control methods and simulation environments, rubbing shoulders with top-notch professors, scientists, engineers, and bright-eyed graduate students.

This role will focus on the simulation design and software development across a spectrum of areas, from quantum device modeling to distributed applications and network control planes. This is an opportunity to leave your mark on the future of quantum networking technology, surrounded by the best and brightest in the field.

What You Will Do:

  • Model quantum devices and processes in network simulation frameworks.
  • Develop quantum applications and algorithms.
  • Integrate QUANT-NET control plane and simulation software.
  • Create evaluation scripts and test harnesses.
  • Collaborate with software engineers on quantum network control software.
  • Analyze and solve moderate-scope problems.
  • Exercise judgment within defined procedures.
  • Foster productive internal/external relationships.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field plus 2 years of experience, or equivalent.
  • Proven track record in quantum algorithm research and development.
  • Expertise in quantum network modeling and simulation.
  • Proficiency with tools like Netsquid for quantum network modeling and simulation.
  • Effective collaboration skills in a diverse team environment spanning multiple institutions.
  • Strong communication abilities for presenting software developments.
  • Proficiency in Python software development.
  • Aptitude for applying academic research to define software behavior.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for moderate-scope issues.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This full salary range of this position is between $84,600 to $142,764 per year and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $95,172 to $116,340 per year depending upon candidate's full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework or remote modes. Work must be performed within the United States.
