Description

The primary function of this position is to perform clinical and clerical duties and responsibilities in support of the SIU Medicine North Dirksen Express Care in Springfield, IL. This position requires a flexible schedule during weekdays, weekends, and occasional holidays. The incumbent's responsibility is to ensure that quality and efficient health care delivery is provided to patients under the direction of a Medical Doctor, Advanced Practice Clinician, Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Examples of Duties

Clinical Support 100%

Pursuant to the specific verbal or written direction and under the direct supervision of a licensed provider or registered nurse, this position may:

  1. Order supplies/laundry and manage inventories
  2. Stock and rotate supplies
  3. Clean rooms/furniture per SIU Healthcare cleaning and disinfection policy
  4. Disinfect/sterilize equipment according to Department and SIU guidelines
  5. Room patients; set up rooms based on examination type
  6. Assist a licensed practitioner with clinical procedures
  7. After department competency completion, according to an order or protocol, perform clinical tests and procedures including but not limited to:
  1. Adult/Pediatric vision screening; enter results into electronic health record
  2. Review and follow clinical standing orders and procedures as approved by Express Care medical director
  3. Perform waived lab testing such as urine, pregnancy test, hemoccult, rapid strep, throat culture, and accucheck; may NOT interpret results that are not immediately provided by the test (i.e. pregnancy)
  4. Collect and prepare lab specimens, urine and sputum specimens
  5. EKG
  6. Spirometry
  7. Pulse oximetry, peak flow, nebulizer treatment
  8. Simple dressing changes
  9. Remove sutures or staples after a licensed professional has inspected
  10. Ear wash
  11. Begin medication review/reconciliation process by verifying the medication list. If there are discrepancies, update list but may NOT reconcile. (A licensed professional must reconcile any medication discrepancies.)
  12. Perform urinary catheterizations on adult patients only; 18 or older
  13. Perform phlebotomy
  14. Perform TB skin testing; may NOT interpret results
  15. Administer single-dose injections listed in the protocols and approved by the medical director. The authorization to do so is granted by a licensed practitioner, either verbally, written and/or by the written protocol. Exception: may pop the rubber stopper in prepackaged units such as: Solumedrol and Lupron Depot, mix and inject.
  16. Enter and transmit new medications and change medication dosage under a licensed Provider's supervision via direct approval or written department protocol. The department must have a written protocol defining what meds and the conditions in which the incumbent may enter and transmit new medications and change medications.
16. Notify Patients of normal test results at the direction of a licensed Provider or RN, in accordance with HIPAA. Refers patient to a nurse if the patient has questions about their test results.
17. Functions as a receptionist as needed; check in patients and answer phones
18. Notify patients of normal blood only- via standardized letter or phone at the direction of a licensed practitioner or nurse, by HIPAA, if the blood results are in the normal range and the normal ranges are printed along with the results. Refers patients to a nurse if they have questions about their test results.
19. Give prevention reminders and order appropriate labs and preventative studies under licensed practitioner supervision via direct approval or department protocol.
20. Under a licensed practitioner's supervision via direct approval or a written protocol, educate patients about a diagnosis or treatment using approved education and reading it verbatim.
21. Refers patient to a nurse if the patient has questions about the education received.
22. Enter orders with a licensed practitioner or RN approval for diagnostic tests. All orders (verbal or written) will be entered into the electronic health record.
23. Document in the electronic health record and on charge ticket\encounter.
24. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

1) High School graduate or equivalent; AND

2) Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification (CMA, American Association of Medical Assistants; NCMA, National Center for Competency Testing; CCMA, National Healthcareer Associate; or RMA, American Medical Technologists)

Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
