Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has immediate opportunities for Fire Systems Specialists at our Burns Harbor and Indiana Harbor Locations. The Fire Systems Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all fixed fire systems in the plant are functioning properly, providing necessary alarm and/or extinguishing capability to vital production equipment and plant assets. The Fire Systems Specialist is responsible for testing, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Plantwide fire alarms, Central station and proprietary alarm circuits, Fixed fire detection and suppression systems of all types, including all associated alarm panels, Fire pumps, and controllers. Standpipe systems, Fire Hydrants, and Fire Department Connections.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Writing scopes for the installation of new fire protection systems.
  • Assisting project management/consulting on new installations including writing the specifications for the systems.
  • Educating and training mill department personnel on their fire suppression equipment.
  • Coordinating and following up on contractor work and Cleveland-Cliffs labor force work.
  • Witnessing acceptance testing of new fire protection systems.
  • Interfacing with risk management and insurance company consultants on system status, changes, installations, and designs.
  • Writing work orders and requisitions for new installations and repairs.
  • Performing repairs that require special knowledge and or certification such as control panel repair/programming, central station repair, deluge, and dry valve repairs.
  • Ordering parts and maintaining spare parts for fire systems.
  • Coordinating and conducting surveys and walk-throughs with departments and contractors.
  • Backing up firefighting operations.
  • Tending to fire system emergencies.
  • Provide training to emergency services personnel regarding normal fire systems operations, and emergency response activities in the event of system activation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Be willing to work at heights.
  • Be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Skills.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degreefrom an accredited institution with a major study in electrical, mechanical, or electronics field.
  • Formal technical school or college training in electrical, mechanical, and electronics fields.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to interact well with employees in other departments.
  • Good comprehension of fire alarm and suppression systems.
