Job Description

General Summary of Position
Provides technical information, coordination and direction to technical staff in a specific laboratory section engaged in performing specialized tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Monitors quality control, quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Participates in and facilitates the management of the operational, personnel and financial activities of the department. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assigns employees to perform, document and report routine and specialized testing in assigned area. Assists in correlation of laboratory findings with disease stage, integration of data from other laboratory specialty areas. Reviews test results for accuracy, confirming abnormal results and specimen discrepancies and instituting corrective procedures. Advises technical staff in utilizing judgement and discretion in consideration of sample integrity, process calibration, reagent concentration and stability, quality control relationship to unknown results, evaluation of unexpected patient results and error identification. Ensures immediate notification of patient care areas and/or physicians of critical values. Performs testing as required.
  • Reviews and evaluates daily quality control, quality assurance measures, and problem analysis to assure that tolerance limits are not exceeded. Make decisions concerning quality control data and initiates corrective action. Advises Laboratory Manager of quality control/assurance problems. Reviews completed CAP surveys and other proficiency testing materials prior to return for technical and clerical accuracy.
  • Serves as technical resource and guides troubleshooting of instrument, technical, and computer problems. Reviews instrument performance evaluations, including accuracy, precision, and linearity checks; and prepares written reports. Reviews checks, calibrations, and equipment maintenance, reviewing all instrument maintenance at prescribed intervals and as appropriate. Performs instrument troubleshooting and makes repairs as appropriate. Keeps related records.
  • Facilitates the implementation of all information and technical systems. Participates and coordinates Quality/Performance Improvement and regulatory initiatives including procedure writing and revision, statistical analysis, audits, assessments including competency assessments and problem resolution. Reviews and monitors productivity and workflow to maximize efficiency. Maintains compliance and participates in inspections by all regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Assumes leadership by acting as a positive role model for staff, participating in laboratory management functions, contributing feedback to all aspects of the facility (staff, managers, and administrative and medical directors) in a constructive manner. Performs laboratory manager duties as assigned or in absence.
  • Participates in monitoring and controlling assigned operational and capital budgets within administrative guidelines. Assists in forecasting and development of future budgets and capital needs.
  • Assist personnel management functions for the designated area to include, but not limited to; applicant evaluation and hiring process, scheduling, coaching, counseling, evaluating competency and performance and terminating employees as delegated by or with the Manager's/Director's approval.
  • Acts as a technical resource and mentor to the technical and all medical center staff, providing instruction on basic theory, technical and organizational skills and applications of test procedures. Assists with training and orientation of Medical Technologists, Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Technicians, and students. Participates in orientation and/or training of patient care staff.
  • Plans, provides and evaluates continuing education programs and maintains current knowledge in the field. Coordinates staff attendance of all mandatory programs on Universal Precautions, Disaster Plan, Electrical and Fire Safety and Chemical Hygiene Plan/Hazard Communication. Ensures a safe and orderly work environment and follows all hospital and laboratory safety practices and regulatory procedures.
  • Monitors personnel performing special assignments such as inventory and ordering of reagents, evaluation of new products, procedures, or materials, installation of new equipment and training on new or modified instrumentation or equipment. Monitors receipt and storage of supplies per established procedure and regulatory restrictions.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all-inclusive.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree preferably in Medical Technology, required or
    • related field. required and
    • Master's degree in chemistry, physical preferred or
    • biological sciences preferred and
    • Must meet CLEA 88 requirements for high complexity testing. required and
    • Must meet the Federal requirements. required

    Experience

    • 3-4 years As laboratory technologist required and
    • Prior supervisory experience preferred
    • Supervisory license preferred
    • Specialty certification preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist required
