About the Role

The Anchorage Journeyman Oiler is to perform a full range of powered and non-powered equipment inspection, troubleshoot, repair/replacement and service of tractors, dollies, and chassis, as needed in a safe, efficient, and economical manner.

What you'll do:

  • Comply with OSHA safe working rules and regulations along with FMCSR job specific requirements.
  • Inspect shop powered or non-powered equipment for safe working order before use or post repairs.
  • Regularly maintain, inspect prior to and post use of safety equipment for personal protection.
  • Attend and pass training for OSHA, Company, & job specific requirements such as but not limited to fall prevention training, Lock-Out and Tag-Out (LOTO), Hazardous materials, eye wash, fire extinguisher, etc.
  • Perform maintenance on wheeled commercial trailer chassis, industrial equipment, automotive engines, special purpose, and material handling equipment. Examples include but are not limited to heavy and light forklifts, snow removal equipment, truck tractors (yard and over the highway), pick-ups, straight trucks, trailers, special purpose yard repair vehicles and general ground support equipment.
  • Conduct some mechanical repair work and electrical system component repair/replacement as needed.
  • Perform similar work on light and medium duty special purpose equipment and general-purpose equipment, e.g., forklift trucks, warehouse tractors, snow removal equipment, all-terrain vehicles, jacks, pumps, weed eaters, snow blowers, chain saws, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, and equipment. Much of this equipment has utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems requiring service and inspection.
  • Ensure electrical and electronic items are inspected and serviced to remain operational.
  • Coordinate with mechanics and technical personnel from manufacturing to determine repair required, troubleshoot cause, and determine the appropriate corrective action.
  • Prepare maintenance work-order reports, record parts utilized or needed for order, and assist in maintaining a technical library inclusive of researching technical information.
  • Perform body and fender related repairs and preparation on commercial vehicles, shipping containers and equipment of 1/4 to 20-ton capacity to include general purpose vehicles undergoing repairs.
  • Safely transport single, doubles combinations into and out of restricted spaces, coupling doubles, pre-tripping a set of doubles in 20 minutes or less.
  • An Oiler may be tasked to perform building cleaning, sweeping, washing, and scrubbing floors.
  • Keep the outside parking lot, and main yard areas cleaned as needed/directed.
  • Perform tire repair, break down, plugging, patching, buffing, balancing, mounting, and dismounting.
  • Refuel, lubricate, and perform service on all types of equipment, tractors, forklifts, generators, chassis, dollies, and other power equipment, as needed or directed.
  • Pre-trip equipment, wash and clean as needed or directed.
  • Work is performed with only general supervision. Perform other duties as assigned by the Oiler Foreman & Mechanic General/Shift Foreman.

You have these skills:

  • Must be able to endure severe weather and temperature conditions while performing maintenance.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate using the English Language.
  • Must be computer literate to the extent necessary to perform required job functions.
  • Must be a team player and able to get along with others.
  • Must be capable of entering and exiting cabs of tractors 25 or more times per hour, which requires flexibility to step up/down two or more steps with bending, twisting, and turning movements.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment, inclusive of diagnostic, to perform functions of job.
  • Must be proficient in all types of forklifts, gas, electric, and diesel to include top picks/high lifts. Forklifts may be 1 ton - 35 ton.
  • Must be proficient with yard tractors, over the highway commercial tractors, operating bobtail, with single, and with doubles attached.

And these qualifications:

  • Must maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Must possess a CDL with Tanker, Air Brake, double and triples, HazMat endorsements and have current DOT Physical.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain 49 CFR, Part 362.25 Vehicle Brake Inspector qualifications.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain 49 CFR, Part 396.19 Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspector qualifications.
  • Must be Forklift, Top Pick, Swapper and Tire Bay certified within 90 days and maintain those qualifications.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
  • Ability to work all shifts and any weekdays, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Must become a union member if hired.

  • Following directions, understanding all manuals along with electrical and mechanical schematics.

The physical demand for this position requires the oiler to be physically capable of working in, around, on top of and under the equipment. Oilers are involved in constant physical activity while standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, bending, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching.

Sitting 10 % of time.

Standing 50 % of time.

Walking 40 % of time.

Lifting 2 - 75 lbs. Various types of components, tools, and equipment.

Carrying 2 - 50 lbs. Various types of components, tools, and equipment.

Pushing 2 - 100 lbs. Various types of components, tools, and equipment.

Pulling 2 - 100 lbs. Various types of components, tools, and equipment.
