Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Research Compliance Specialist's primary responsibilities are to review grant proposals for and advise investigators about potential compliance requirements, coordinating and conducting the RCR training program, managing the RIO websites, and creating reports for all RIO programs. These responsibilities require working knowledge of all RIO programs and strong communication skills to convey compliance requirements clearly and accurately. The position will also be involved with the other RIO programs to varying levels depending on program activities and workloads. These responsibilities may include reviewing human subject or animal research applications, tracking conflict of interest compliance, conducting restricted party screenings and monitoring foreign travel, and responding to email inquiries and/or questions regarding OSPREY, the online system used for research-related submissions (grant proposals, IRB applications, conflict of interest disclosures, etc.).
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Completion of human subject protections, conflict of interest, export control, responsible conduct of research, and/or animal welfare training, preferably through the CITI Program.
  • Experience in university research administration, specifically coordinating one or more research compliance/integrity programs.
  • Experience using the InfoEd Global research administration platform strongly preferred.
  • Ability to understand complex concepts and explain them verbally and in writing in understandable terms to a wide variety of customers.
  • Ability to provide customers with specific references to UNCW policy or regulations.
  • Ability to provide thorough, collegial, and timely responses to faculty, staff and student researcher inquiries related to research integrity programs.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with campus community.
  • Ability to refer customers to helpful resources as appropriate.
  • Ability to edit and make improvements to websites.
  • High level of proficiency using MS Office products, particularly Excel for reporting duties.
  • Experience using Zoom, InfoReady and Cascade programs.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Research Integrity Office (RIO) is a service unit within Research & Innovation responsible for the oversight of several compliance programs. RIO provides regulatory and policy guidance and compliance tracking on human and live, vertebrate animal research subject projects (Institutional Review Board - IRB and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee - IACUC), annual and project-specific conflicts of interest (COI) and external professional activity for pay (EPAP) disclosures, and export control (EC) requirements. RIO also provides training on the responsible conduct of research (RCR) and tracks compliance with RCR requirements. This office is designed to serve all faculty, student and staff needs for funded and unfunded projects and programs.
