General Summary of Position

All associates are accountable for their role in meeting patient experience standards. Responsible for observation and assessment of patients undergoing radiation therapy. Position requires routine assignment ("float") among multiple practice site/locations in an assigned geographic region.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Assures compliance with Federal and State regulations.
  • Completes data base thoroughly and extracts vital data from the medical chart. Communicates information to physician and documents in chart.
  • Complies with monitoring and documentation of daily logs (refrigerator, crash cart, drug log, medication samples, nutritional supplements inventory and dispensary) as per standards set forth by accrediting bodies. Contacts nurses for updates on hospitalized patients. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Coordinates with physician and office staff to have an efficient flow of patients through the facility. Ensures that patient records and referring physicians are kept up-to-date.
  • Functions in multiple practice sites as required based on role expectations of routine assignment (
  • Keeps work area neat and organized. Maintains adequate supply of patient education material and medical supplies. Stocks exam rooms and ensures that equipment is working properly. Cleans & sterilizes equipment as necessary. Maintains liaison with other disciplines, such as social services, dietary support, speech therapy, physical therapy, pastoral care and pain management and sees that their services are made available to patients in an appropriate and timely fashion.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Participates in placement of applicators for HDR brachytherapy, performs patient care and monitoring as necessary. Performs conscious sedation and recovery patients being treated with brachytherapy. Participates in weekly chart rounds, tumor board, nursing meetings and other in-services appropriate to the nursing care of the patient.
  • Performs assessment for contrast patients. Performs IV contrast using the pressure injector and provides documentation. Evaluates patients for contrast reaction and provides proper treatment should one occur. Performs assessments on under-treatment patients and follow-up patients and documents appropriately. Assesses patients for special needs and plans appropriate intervention, i.e. skin changes, dietary needs, social service needs, health care psychological and support needs. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Provides support and education to patients. Acts as resource for patient and family members. Fields questions selected to treatment and side effects. Documents actions and follows up on interventions. Schedules tests, obtains pre-authorization, and follows up on results.
  • Travels to other offices for cross training and coverage. Able to function in different facilities.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland. required

    Experience

    • 1-2 years 2 years medical-surgical nursing experience required and
    • 1-2 years 2 years clinical oncology experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland. required and
    • CPR-Healthcare Provider certified that has been issued from the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Working knowledge of various computer software applications, including Microsoft Word, in a Windows environment.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
