The Family Enterprise Center (FEC) at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School was founded in 2008 in partnership with the nationally recognized Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Business School Dean Doug Shackelford served as the Center's faculty champion. The FEC was created to address the needs of students, alumni, and families seeking educational resources and support for their family-owned firms in a service provider-free environment.

Each year since its founding, the Center has expanded its offerings to meet increased demand. The program has grown from one course offered to undergraduates in 2006 to a thriving Center that offers coursework, leadership roundtables, club activities, mentor opportunities, alumni peer groups, a digital teaching series, and an annual conference. To date, over 1,000 students from around the world have participated in the Center's coursework and programs.

The FEC has been funded through the generosity of donors, the support of the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, and several revenue-generating programs created by the Center. In June 2019, the FEC received a major gift that will allow for sustainability and growth of programs. This gift provides an opportunity to expand the Center's team and to create additional offerings aimed at helping family firms acquire the knowledge, skills, and connections they need to achieve business, family, and personal goals.
