Position Title: Technical Services Librarian, Library and Archives

Position Type: Full-Time

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Division: Learning & Engagement

Department: Library and Archives

Reports to: Director of Library and Archives

Compensation Range: $55,000 - $60,000

About Crystal Bridges:

Crystal Bridges is a museum of American art located in Bentonville, Arkansas. We explore the unfolding story of America by actively collecting, exhibiting, interpreting, and preserving outstanding works that illuminate the American heritage and artistic possibilities. Founded by Alice Walton in 2005, the museum opened in 2011 and is a public, non-profit charitable organization with free admission.

Position Summary:

The Technical Service Librarian, Library and Archives will facilitate use of Crystal Bridges' library and archival collections by managing the platforms and procedures that promote resource discovery. Primary responsibilities include record creation for and general maintenance of the museum's integrated library system (currently Alma) and archives management system (currently ArchivesSpace), as well as collections processing and storage management. Joining the museum's Library and Archives department during a period of assessment and growth, the Technical Services Librarian will play a key role in designing and/or implementing new discovery technologies and collections workflows.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Process and catalog/describe library and archival materials
  • Provide expertise and training on ILS and archives management systems
  • Work with the Director of Library and Archives to evaluate current approaches to the organization and performance of technical services, update and streamline policies and workflows, and document processes
  • Organize biannual collection inventories of the reference collection; plan and implement as-needed collection shifts of reference, rare book, and archival collections
  • Assess the condition of library and archival holdings to propose preservation projects and priorities
  • Remain current with technical services, metadata and cataloging standards, and digital library development, and engage in relevant professional development

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist researchers and museum guests with reference and use requests
  • Assist the Director of Library and Archives in the delegation or creation of tasks for interns and volunteer Library Guides; supervise interns and Library Guides in the Director's absence
  • Participate on department, division, and museum-wide working groups and committees
  • Track, compile, and analyze reference and collections data
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of Library and Archives

Qualifications and Skills:

Education, Training, and Traits

  • ALA accredited MLIS and/or MA in art history, history, or a related field
  • Two years' experience creating records in an integrated library system; working knowledge of related metadata standards and authorities
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including attention to detail and deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and effectively interact with a wide array of colleagues and constituents
  • Research skills

Work Experience

  • Experience working in an academic library, museum library, and/or with special collections
  • Experience working with interns and volunteers

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Art subject cataloging experience
  • Experience working with rare and/or artist books
  • Experience processing archival collections
  • Background in art history, American history, or a related field
  • Knowledge of print and electronic resources for art

  • Work environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, construction site, and in communities served. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Position requires some independent overnight travel for research, professional meetings, and other travel as necessary to fulfill responsibilities of the position.
