Director & Associate General Counsel - Claims

As Director & Associate General Counsel - Claims, you will be responsible for proactively investigating, managing, and resolving high exposure claims, including general liability and insurance. In this role, you will keep the System VP & Deputy General Counsel informed but primarily provide direct support to the System on pending litigation and other claims pursuant to applicable laws, regulations and legal strategy to limit the System's exposure and damages.

You will be responsible for managing different types of claims and litigation matters as necessary, including developing case strategies, managing outside counsel, supporting in-house counsel with the preparation of defenses, reviewing pleadings and dipositive motions, participation in negotiations and significant discovery practices. You will be expected to have an oversight of litigation management, client health care counseling across various services areas and clinical settings, and alternative dispute resolution to be successful in this role including resolution and settlement of cases within your authority.

  • Hours: Monday-Friday, during normal business hours

  • Required Travel: to other Endeavor Health locations as needed

What you will do:

  • Provides legal counsel and develops creative/practical solutions to manage claims defenses.

  • Understands and implements policies and procedures related to the assigned area, including system responsibility for making decisions to evolve policies within this area to reflect best practices, regulatory changes and/or System alignment.

  • Participates in business, operational, and strategic decisions, including analyzing and evaluating risk in coordination with outside counsel and internal stakeholders as appropriate relating to the assigned area.

  • Organizes and manages case reports, including coordination with Third Party Administrators (TPA) and insurance carriers on status as necessary.

  • Determines as to when third-party involvement is necessary, such as outside attorneys, experts, coverage adjustors etc. Directs and monitors the vendor services to ensure the effective cost containment of expenses on claims.

  • Oversees and coordinates work and communication amongst team member(s) to ensure efficiency and balanced workload, while developing areas for continued growth and responsibility to best support the System and Legal department. Demonstrates excellent leadership skills, including those needed to manage and inspire confidence in staff.

  • Serves as a trusted partner to various clinical areas, including those specifically assigned by the System VP and Deputy General Counsel or other senior leaders of the System, to provide health care counseling related to risk assessments including analysis and guidance on laws, regulations, forms, policies, consent, and other areas of inquiry.

  • Expected to have strong knowledge and subject matter expertise in applicable, federal, state, and local laws including strategic legal analysis and guidance to the organization related to assigned matters and as requested on a case-by-case basis.

  • Remains abreast of legislation and regulations affecting the organizational programs, products, and services, ensuring compliance with applicable legal provisions and reporting requirements

What you will need:

  • Education: Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school

  • Certification: Admitted and in good standing to practice in Illinois or another state with Chief Legal Office approval

  • Experience:

    • 7+ years of relevant and/or progressive experience at a law firm or in-house legal department with healthcare or related field preferred.

    • 2+ years of leadership experience

  • Unique or Preferred Skills:

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Highly developed interpersonal skills

    • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in a fast paced, changing work environment

    • Initiative to meet designated timelines with minimum supervision
