This position is responsible for educating and training WVUHs Cancer Registry Staff as directed by the Manager. Will also oversee and/or perform the overall auditing and education plans for the Cancer Registry staff. The Cancer Registy Auditor / Educator perform cancer registry quality audits, provide ongoing feedback and education. The Cancer Registry Auditor / Educator utilizes various registry manuals including; STORE (Standard Oncology Registry Entry),AJCC Staging system, NCCN treatment guidelines, Solid Tumor Rules, SEER Summary Stage, SEER Grade Manual, SSDI (Site Specific Data items), and other references and software to ensure accurate coding and abstracting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Graduate of Health Information Technology (HIT)/Health Information Management or equivalent program AND five(5) years of abstracting experience; OR Cancer Registry Management Program AND Five (5) years of abstracting experience.

2. Oncology Data Specialist credential (ODS-C) with required CE's maintained with annual renewal of credential.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or related field.

2. RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator), RN (Registered Nurse) with Oncology Data Specialist credential (ODS-C).

EXPERIENCE:

1. Extensive experience performing all cancer registry functions including Casefinding, Abstracting and follow up with. coding cancer registry data items using AJCC Staging system, STORE (Standard Oncology Registry Entry), NCCN treatment guidelines, Solid Tumor Rules, SEER Summary Stage, SEER Grade Manual, SSDI (Site Specific Data items) as well as knowledge of all Cancer Registry Standard setters regulations especially Commission on Cancer.

2. Previous supervisory or project management experience.

3. Previous auditing and training Experience

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Manages activities of designated cancer registry personnel in training for WVUHS and assures the monitoring and reporting of respective employee's developmental activity.

2. Manages quality improvement audits and training of designated cancer registry staff. Prepares and presents Quality Audit reports and any corrective plan to our WVUM Cancer Committees.

3. Acts as expert cancer abstracting resource to all stakeholders.

4. Assists with policy and procedure updates for those areas of responsibility. In-services appropriate staff regarding changes in these areas.

5. Develops and maintains existing abstracting policies, procedures, query development, work queues and training materials in conjunction with management.

7. Continually communicates with Cancer Registry Staff, Medical Staff, Physician Advisor and Department Management.

8. Organizes, facilitates, performs, tracks, trends, and reports on internal quality reviews.

9. Designs and/or uses existing audit tools to monitor the accuracy of coding, documentation gaps in abstracts completed by the Cancer Registrars.

10. Coordinates audits performed by outside agencies by obtaining accounts to be reviewed, acting as a liaison between agency and Cancer Registry personnel to gather data to be reviewed, facilitating exit conferences with Cancer Registrars, and providing final reports to Cancer Registry Manager.

11. Ensures audit (external and internal) recommendations are completed (i.e. education, re-abstracting changes).

12. Communicates regularly with the Cancer Registry Leadership on activities, problems, coding and/or documentation issues and pending audits.

13. Ensures audit (external and internal) recommendations are completed (i.e. coding education, coding changes).

14. Extracts analyzes from various sources and develops and action plan when necessary.

15. Assist with on-boarding of new Cancer Registrars in regard to standardization, coding/quality related policies, audits and initiatives.

16. Updates Cancer Registrars on compliance and other regulatory changes.

17. Keeps abreast of coding changes, Cancer Registry Standard setters, State and federal regulations and updates to cancer registry resources.

18. Assists manager as needed with updating the existing curriculum for WVUHS Cancer Registry Training, as well as other special projects regarding enhance coding and abstraction. Utilizes all necessary systems as part of curriculum and educational courses and administers exams. Involvement with testing and installation of system upgrades when necessary to assure curriculum is up-to-date.

19. Abstracts cases as needed.
