Job Description

Responsible for the operational and strategic direction of system-wide environmental compliance which includes adherence to State and Federal regulatory requirements related to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), The Joint Commission (TJC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), and others.

**Position can be based anywhere in our WI/IL service market. Must travel occassionally to sites.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Accountable for the performance and results of Aurora facilities related to adherence with state and federal regulations for providing a safe environment. Directs and incorporates best practice and evidence-based theories and processes to achieve compliance and provide patients and caregivers with a safe environment. This includes processes and activities that reduce and control environmental hazards.
  • Provides operational and strategic direction to direct reports and system teams related to the Environment of Care and Emergency Management programs that ensures continuity, standardization and best practice for a safe environment throughout the Aurora system.
  • Directs readiness initiatives and performs site audits at Aurora sites to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and implements program standards, practices, policies and procedures and forecasts resource needs across the system related to compliance, environmental safety and emergency response.
  • Provides operational direction to senior leadership related to emergency management strategies.
  • Provides direction and participates in system-wide response activities related to emerging infectious diseases and mass casualty incidents.
  • Directs department leaders in the development of business and financial continuity plans for the Aurora system which includes hospital-based departments and corporate entities.
  • Responsible for providing a leadership role in local and statewide planning initiatives related to emergency management, to ensure a strong partnership with community partners across the state.
  • Directs and oversees Aurora staff and consultants to identify and mitigate organizational issues related to environmental safety.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Health Care Environmental Manager (HEM) certification issued by the ECRI Institute's Center for Healthcare Environmental Management (CHEM).


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Safety or related field.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 7 years of experience in safety and/or facilities management that includes experience in emergency management, environmental safety and life safety. Includes 3 years of management experience in the management of staff, budgets, and multiple facilities operations functions.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of State and Local regulatory agency requirements; knowledge of building codes related to facilities safety and knowledge of standards related to The Joint Commission.
  • Skills and demonstrated experience in establishing excellent working relationships and partnering with various teams and levels of leadership across a large organization to achieve a shared vision and objectives.
  • Experience and knowledge of health care environments with strong emphasis on regulatory compliance and environmental safety.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication along with exceptional interpersonal, collaborative and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of health care delivery and dynamics within a large integrated health care system.
  • Excellent project management skills


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Generally exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, bend, twist, climb and reach above shoulders at various times throughout the workday.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical and explosive hazards. As a result, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
