Job Description

Position Summary:

The Laboratory Manager will provide technical assistance to faculty, staff and students in the maintenance, implementation, upgrade, and use of scientific instruments and equipment used for teaching and research in the College of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science. The Laboratory Manager is also responsible for implementing an inventory and maintenance schedule, as well as assuring safe and effective use of equipment by developing user and safety protocols and training laboratory users.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility for the Mechanical, Industrial, Engineering Physics, Civil, and Environmental Engineering laboratories in addition to assisting the other College Engineering laboratories periodically
  • Performs routine maintenance and calibration in the laboratories to support experimental teaching and research work
  • Purchases of laboratory consumables and equipment parts
  • Oversees purchasing, maintenance, calibration, repair, storage, cleaning, and liquidation of equipment
  • Communicates with university and college administration to ensure compliance with safety standards
  • Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures in alignment with strategic initiatives and objectives
  • Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing information, making recommendations to leadership, and representing the interests of the unit
  • Documentation of the equipment
  • Development of equipment inventory, which includes technical specifications, maintenance schedule, calibration records, and other relevant information
  • Develops standard operational procedures for equipment
  • Assists programs in developing equipment replacement and purchase plans with budgets
  • Provides training on equipment usage and safety instructions to new and visiting students and researchers
  • Answers questions and provides technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students
  • Directs and supervises the day-to-day laboratory operations
  • Exercises supervisory authority
  • Completes necessary university trainings
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Studies, or Tech Ed. OR two years' experience working with mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic equipment.
  • Familiarity with mechanical, thermal, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of relevant safety practices
  • At least two years of relevant education or experience
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Competency in Microsoft Office software
