Old Republic Surety Company (ORSC) is currently seeking a VP-Surety Claims to join its ClaimsTeam at its home office located in Brookfield, WI. Under the supervision of the President & Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President - Surety Claims is responsible for settling all varieties of surety claims (principally contract requiring bond performance obligations) with the purpose of minimizing losses and meeting contractual obligations. This position does require Surety experience of at least 10 years.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Investigate and settle miscellaneous claims including license, probate, fidelity, and miscellaneous surety to meet contractual obligations and minimize company exposure.
  • Investigate and determine liability of contract bonds claims for performance and labor and material payment bonds to resolve (and/or minimize) these at the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost to the company while still fulfilling contractual obligations.
  • Train and advise other employees on the handling of contract bond claims to enhance department cross-training.
  • Determine when to retain outside counsel with the purpose of maximizing the efficient handling of the claim and still minimizing company costs.
  • Draft contracts as required which may include agreements to finance contractors, take-over agreements with owners, agreements with new completing contractors, and new agreements with subcontractors on the job for the purpose of fulfilling the contractual obligation of the company and reducing costs which might go to claim.
  • Determine salvage prospects or recovery of losses or expenses incurred in order to get subrogation from the principal and direct collection activities to minimize losses.
  • Set up adequate reserves sufficient to pay particular claims while not excessive to protect financial interests of the company and sustain current company assets.
  • Supervise direct reports, make recommendations for performance management and disciplinary action. Train subordinates to achieve goals. In addition, contribute to the new employee selection process.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires Bachelor's Degree in a related field, and a minimum of ten years of Surety Claims experience, including progressively successful managerial experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Law degree preferred.

Working as an AVP-Surety Claims requires one to work independently and effectively within a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products is necessary.Other skills necessary include excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills, the ability to maintain accurate records, the ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, strong attention to detail, and the ability to use a variety of office equipment.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
This position requires one to sit for extended periods of time and stand and/or walk occasionally. The position requires one to occasionally push, pull, carry, and/or lift up to 10 pounds. No personal protective equipment is required. Ergonomic equipment is available to employees.
