Job Description

The Advanced Center for Translational Genetic Medicine (ACT-GeM) within the Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute is seeking a laboratory manager for a dynamic team with a wide range of interdisciplinary projects. The overarching goal of our laboratory is to understand the causes of rare pediatric genetic disorders; to study disease mechanisms; and to enable the identification of novel therapeutic paradigms. The lab manager will support the research team through the maintenance of laboratory resources, purchasing, and a variety of other technical duties in a state-of-the-art facility.

Essential Job Functions

  • Administrative duties. Serve as a critical cornerstone for laboratory activities and will act as an operational hub for the staff, faculty, and collaborators.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Maintenance of shared laboratory reagents. Maintain inventory of critical resources (plasmids, DNA, cell lines), and allocate these resources to staff and external collaborators. Work with human biospecimens collected as part of ongoing human subjects research (human blood, genomic DNA, transformed and primary cell lines, and surgical biopsies).

  • Maintenance of laboratory equipment. The candidate will play a critical role in keeping our lab functional by a) recommending purchases of major capital equipment; and b) maintaining or calibrating existing equipment. Serve as the point of contact with vendors to facilitate equipment repair.

  • Laboratory Protocols and Standard Operating Procedures. Ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are centralized and current, train staff in SOPs. Maintain quality checks on laboratory safety and biohazards. Serve an important regulatory role to maintain our laboratory protocols including biosafety, radiation, controlled substances and animal protocols; interact with regulatory personnel for laboratory inspections.

  • Purchasing for laboratory needs. Centralize the placement of all orders for the laboratory, as well as the receipt and organization of reagents upon delivery. Interact with administrative staff as needed to maintain budgets and allocate fund codes to purchases.

  • Technical duties. The candidate should be familiar with techniques conducted routinely in a human genetics and functional modeling laboratory such as molecular cloning, DNA and RNA extraction, DNA sequencing, gene expression studies, tissue culture or microscopy. The candidate will be expected to document procedures and collect data in an organized, complete, and honest fashion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • B.S. in a basic science or health science field.5 years of research experience required.

  • Previous experience in genetics; cell, molecular, or computational biology; botany; zoology or other directly related scientific fields are required. M.S. and experience with vertebrate animals (e.g. mouse, zebrafish) preferred.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated competency in the English language.

  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to successfully interact with diverse stakeholders including clinicians, basic scientists, andtranslational researchers.

  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
