Job Description
Job Summary

Adult Sports Officials are responsible for officiating assigned Milwaukee Recreation Adult Sports leagues games and programs. Opportunities include basketball, flag football, futsal, kickball, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Position Summary
  • Professionalism in demeaner, attitude and dress along with appropriate officiating items in possession, i.e. whistle, watch, clicker, etc.
  • Display respect for participants and game while exhibiting appropriate reactions under pressure.
  • Be punctual and arrive 15-20 minutes before first scheduled game.
  • Follow the pre-game procedures including inspecting the field and participant sign-in.
  • Follow inclement weather procedures including specifics on cancellations and delays.
  • Proper fitness, movement, mobility and agility for sport being officiated.
  • Proper mechanics, positioning, anticipation and decision-making for sport being officiated.
  • Must be knowledgeable on rules while recognizing intent and misconduct.
  • Be prompt, firm, consistent and approachable with rule enforcement.
  • Maintain control of the game while recognizing infractions.
  • Act as the authority figure in conjunction with the scorekeeper (if applicable) and work to create a consistent and safe environment for participants.
  • Check game equipment to ensure safety and inform supervisor when necessary.
  • Maintain your skills by attending mandatory in-service meetings and trainings.
  • Complete appropriate MPS Recreation paperwork for incidents and altercations occurring during games.
Supervision Required

Reports to the Recreation Supervisor of Adult Sports

Job Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position.
  • Able to attend mandatory in-service meetings and trainings.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Experience
  • Officiating adult sports.
  • Official certifications.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Experience working in a public setting that involves diverse groups of people.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knowledge of the sport specific rules.
  • Energetic team player willing to take pride in position and ownership over responsibilities.
  • Desire to learn new skills applicable to position.
  • Ability to exercise conflict management skills and effectively communicate with participants and staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships.
  • Excellent decision-making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to participate interactively with a diverse group of individuals.
