What are we building?

We're building a new platform for Northwestern Mutual - the Strategic Partner Integration (SPI) uses the latest technologies on AWS. SPI platform aims at enabling integration with third-party partners which are strategic in nature. The SPI platform goal is to launch such partnerships in an accelerated manner and make onboarding embedded products seamless through APIs and event based integrations. We're a year into our journey and there's a lot of new capabilities we need you to help us build. Tech stack and development tools used are Node.js, Typescript, Kafka, Aurora(Postgres) DB, Lambda, Kubernetes, Postman, Kevlar, Cucumber.

Our program has several agile-scrum teams that operate together as a part of a program organized using the Scaled Agile Frameworks (SAFe). On your scrum team there will be engineers holding roles as scrum master, DevOps, QA, and leads. There will also be a product owner. There are also designers, architects, and program managers working outside the team to help build the runway of work coming to your team.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop a robust understanding of the SPI, the APIs & Events your team builds and supports, and the up/downstream systems interacting with the platform.
  • Technical leader on your scrum team and within your team of teams (program).
  • Day-to-day work/ideas/innovations/perspectives should regularly bring benefit to many devs/solutions or the program.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in how we work.
  • Continuously look for reducing the development cycle for incremental features by building reusable frameworks & artifacts.
  • Use working relationships across teams within their division.
  • Build, enhance, and support those digital products alongside a scrum team, pairing as appropriate.
  • Work within a scrum team on new feature development or bug resolution.
  • Develop unit tests & Integration tests.
  • Understand QA standard processes and can comfortably flex into QA tester roles as needed for the team.
  • Regularly pull code evaluation work from the backlog providing mentoring across the team to newer developers.
  • Bring innovative ideas and solutions to business problems
  • Regularly work with Architect, Product Manager, Design leads to help design new system-wide capabilities and help ensure your team builds towards your solutions
  • Work within and outside your program to help up/downstream teams at NM integrate with our platform

  • Take stretch design assignments for new capabilities.
  • Participate in Hackathon competitions organized at least once a year. That's your time to share new ideas that can influence a wider employee base.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 4-5 years of professional software engineering experience, 3-4 of which is with relevant engineering tools.
  • Majority of experience involve development of back-end applications which are API based and experience of implementing event driven integrations.
  • Strong technical skills closely applicable to our tech stack with proven experience of developing microservices using Node.js and Typescript required.
  • Experience using additional development tools: Kafka, Aurora(Postgres) DB, Lambda, Kubernetes, Postman, Kevlar, Cucumber preferred.
  • Strong fundamentals of cloud native development and proven experience of deploying high performant APIs on public cloud infrastructure.
  • Shared vision of development, unit testing and Integration testing as part of one unit of work and ability to contribute without any help to all the three areas.
  • Ability to independently create high level and detailed design results by developing clear understanding of requirements and partnering with architects and product teams as required.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, ownership attitude and continuous learning.
  • Experience developing solutions following agile methodology in iterative manner.
  • Mentor for the team and department.
  • Able to dissect problems, design solutions, break them down so yourself and a team can build them out.
  • Thrive in a team environment.
  • Capable of communicating between product, engineering, and the business.
  • Manages own time to meet objectives.
  • Ability to perform peer reviews on code and design.
  • Solid understanding of design patterns and architecture.

Pay Range - Start:

$100,030.00

Pay Range - End:

$185,770.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
