Job Summary

Student Wellness Services is seeking outstanding candidates to fill a nurse practitioner or physician assistant position in Student Health Services. The new advanced practice clinician would provide primary care to graduate and undergraduate students who are scientifically minded, culturally diverse, and engaged in a rigorous academic environment. Our tight-knit campus allows for flexibility and strong relationships within Student Affairs to support the unique needs of each student.

Under the general direction of the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Wellness, and reporting to the Medical Director, the incumbent will support the mission of the Institute by delivering evidence-based, high-quality healthcare services and promoting health and wellness education in a collaborative team setting.

The Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant provides holistic care in the area of physical examinations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of health-related problems within the framework of authorized policies and protocols providing medical care to students at The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Student Wellness Services.

This is a Campus Critical position. An employee designated as campus critical is expected to be aware of the campus emergency management plan and to report to Campus as soon as possible in the event of an emergency to assist in campus wide response and recovery efforts.

Essential Job Duties

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provides evidence -based, quality health care to students for primary care of acute, sub-acute, chronic and episodic conditions, illnesses, and injuries.
  • Perform complete physical examinations (pre-matriculation, study abroad,) including taking medical history using the clinical techniques of observation, percussion, palpation, and auscultation.
  • Follow protocols, diagnoses common illnesses and injuries using the above noted techniques with the ability to distinguish between normal, normal variance, and abnormal findings based upon evaluation of the patient's medical history and physical examination.
  • Select and request laboratory tests, x-rays, and diagnostic tests, interpreting test results together with a patient's history and physical to assess a patient's needs and problems.
  • Establish and document the health care plan maintaining clear and accurate documentation of the problem, plan, outcome, and evaluation process as well as updating relevant sections of the electronic record to facilitate collaborative care.
  • Perform sexual and reproductive health examinations including screening for abnormalities, contraceptive methods, pregnancy testing, and STI evaluation with referral to community specialists if needed.
  • Collaborate and consult appropriately with supervising physician/medical director in a timely manner and for more complicated health problems or Institute specific care coordination needs.
  • Makes timely and appropriate referrals to community providers and assists in the coordination of follow up care.
  • Prescribe medication and contraceptive methods in accordance with prescriptive authority according to the State of California Nurse Practice Act/California Physician Assistant Board
  • Incorporates preventive and health education guidance during each clinical encounter in a student centered manner.
  • Participates in immunization programs for the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Collaborate with other health disciplines of the Student Wellness Services in providing care and treatment of students (Counseling and Psychological Services, Occupational Therapy, Athletic Trainers, Case Management, Referrals Coordinator)
  • Attend weekly staff meetings, health center meetings, and one to ones with the Medical Director

Clinical Administrative Duties:

  • Provide consultative services on health -related issues to other campus programs, review and update patient educational materials.
  • Participate in campus outreach programs as requested.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Improvement programs for Student Wellness Services
  • Additional duties as assigned which have included in the past contributing to health center website updates and presence, assisting in medically related response to individual and/or groups during campus wide crises and natural disasters, health form review.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master's degree in nursing, university-based Nurse Practitioner Program (Family Adult) /Physician Assistant program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) or Physician Assistant Board (PAB)
  • Nurse Practitioner: Current California license as a Registered Nurse, BRN certificate, and BLS certification; Valid BRN furnishing certificate and valid, unrestricted DEA number/certificate.
  • Physician Assistant: Current California license as a Physician Assistant and BLS certification; unrestricted DEA number/certificate
  • 3 + years' experience working in primary care.
  • Ability to devise a diagnostic and treatment plan to address patients' medical needs.
  • Ability to analyze situations and take effective action.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records and Office Software programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years in primary care
  • 3+ years' experience working in college/university healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in health education and health promotion activities.
  • Experience with the evaluation and management acute illness and injuries.
  • Experience in provision of gender affirming care and hormone therapy prescription and management.
  • Experience in provision of HIV PEP and PrEP
  • Experience in co-management psychotropic medications within scope for primary care.
  • National Board certification with ANCC, ACNP, or NCCPA
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills, public speaking, and leading group discussions.
  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records (Point and Click) and Office Software programs.

Hiring Range

$111,700 - $135,000 per year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
