• Performs pulmonary function diagnostic procedures for the determination of lung function, which includes collection, and analysis of arterial blood gases.
• Performs spirometry lung volumes, nitrogen washouts and whole body plethysmograph, maximum voluntary ventilations, and diffusion of carbon monoxide studies.
• Gives appropriate inhaled medication treatments during inhaled medication studies.
• Collects and analyzes blood gas samples in radial arteries and/or single stick arterial.
• Operates treadmills for exercise studies utilizing electrocardiography to observe heart rate and arrhythmias.
• Performs ventilation and carbon dioxide response studies, TB/Antigen skin tests, bronchial provocation challenge tests, and assists with cardiopulmonary exercise stress testing and microhematocrits.
• Calibrates and maintains equipment used, which includes running daily controls, calculating and platting for quality control, rotating electrodes, cleaning and performing maintenance as necessary.
• Manages portable oxygen for transport of patients unable to use vendor oxygen.
• Assists physicians performing diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies by administering conscious sedation under the direction of the physician.

Licenses & Certifications

• Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) certification issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) needs to be obtained within 1 year, and
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providerscertification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Degrees

Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy.

Required Functional Experience

Typically requires 2 years of experience in a pulmonary function technologist role.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills to work effectively with physicians, patients and other staff members.Ability to work independently.
