The Senior Network Engineer, Cisco Wired & Wireless works as part of a team of network engineers, to ensure that the University campus network environment is reliable, available, and performant. This is a hybrid-remote opportunity based in Milwaukee, WI that requires a maximum commuting distance that allows being on campus on-call within 1 hour as needed.

SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develops and deploys plans and designs of Cisco network systems that will meet requirements for performance, security, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. Conducts network architecture design, feasibility, and cost studies. Obtains quotes for designed solutions and negotiates pricing with vendors.

2. Uses established commercial best practice design to develop templates and documentation to improve operation procedures. Configures and installs network devices and services (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, QoS). Performs network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes, and security configurations. Ensures security patches are applied to all network infrastructure devices, including voice and video systems.

3. Defines monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Evaluates and analyzes network performance metrics to ensure successful operation of the network. Identifies and evaluates problems. Determines the risk areas and mitigates their impact.

4. Selects and implements security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the security team. Ensures that network security policy and practices are implemented and followed.

5. Designs, develops and maintains configuration standards for network equipment. Serves as an escalation point for network issues, including backbone routing and switching, edge configuration, wireless, and Internet related services. Assists in keeping network infrastructure documentation up to date and assists in inventories for Cisco support renewal purchases. Works to minimize support cost structures via contract pruning and negotiation with vendors.

6. Participates in the design of extensions and additions to the network and incorporation of new technologies and standards. Works with vendors and partners to develop test plans and pilot projects for new and emerging technologies.

7. Keeps informed of the latest technologies to enhance knowledge of networking hardware, software, and best practices. Works with project managers, network and systems administrators and engineers for planning long-term technology adoption and short-term solutions and mitigations.

8. Works within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure.

9. Participate in after-hours on-call rotation and is available to mitigate network issues during unplanned events.

10. Troubleshoots network issues and develops appropriate solutions, resources, and deployment processes. Supports campus wireless and wired network help-desk ticket triage.

SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree

Cisco CCNA Routing & Switching, CCNA Wireless Certification, CompTIA Networks+ Certification, or 7+ years of demonstrated progressive experience developing, designing, deploying, and managing large enterprise Cisco-based networks

6 years of related experience

Demonstrated experience performing a customer service role with strong customer orientation in a high-pressure environment supporting a large user base and working with a help-desk ticketing system

Familiarity with Cisco Campus Network design best practices.

Demonstrated record of maintaining current technical knowledge and staying abreast of state-of-the-art communications & network devices and compliance requirements

Has necessary skills to act as a coordinator to implement significant networking and security-related network initiatives under the guidance of a Project Manager/Director of Infrastructure. Some of these specific skills include:
 o Communication
 o Technical writing
 o Critical thinking
 o Time management
 o Organization


Extensive knowledge in troubleshooting and engineering Cisco wired and managed wireless networks with use of Cisco SNMP appliances (Prime Infrastructure, DNAC, Cacti, etc.)

Familiarity with management of Cisco Wireless LAN controllers

Ability to perform wireless network surveys using several different applications and hardware including Ekahau, Cisco DNA Center, Prime Infrastructure Planning, Apple Airport, etc.

Ability to spec, build, and deploy Cisco multilayer modular and stackable switches to be used throughout campus and routinely upgrade and perform preventative maintenance on and off hours

Extensive experience and skill working via Cisco IOS command-line interface

Understanding of Cisco ISE (Identity Services Engine) troubleshooting and management

Understanding of IPv4 addressing and DNS configuration and management (Infoblox)

Understanding of enterprise-level network-related security best practices

SENIOR NETWORK ENGINEER ADDITIONAL BONUS QUALIFICATIONS 
10+ years of network engineering experience
