Under the supervision of the Laboratory Informatics Manager and working closely with individuals of each laboratory network division you will create, troubleshoot, and maintain middleware software modules. These modules are used to perform everything from mapping order codes to the manipulation of data streams via rules/conditions in a decision-tree/workflow type environment. This may be the position for you if are coming from a laboratory background and having a general knowledge of laboratory testing. You also have some sort of programming background such that you can understand data extractions and how to query data. In addition, you are familiar with regulatory agencies and their associated requirements.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Demonstrates understanding of how automation applications are installed and programmed.
  • 2. Demonstrates understanding of assay validation and proper protocols.
  • 3. Serves as the middleware technical liaison between the vendor and the laboratory.
  • 4. Demonstrates knowledge of custom rule writing.
  • 5. Demonstrated knowledge of mapping and configuration as it related to driver properties.
  • 6. Develops rules and maintains rule sets for all instrument connections.
  • 7. Recognizes middleware/server problems when they occur by responding to error flags and system status indicators. Initiates trouble-shooting procedures in a systematic manner.
  • 8. Initiates trouble-shooting procedures when problems occur. Performs complex problems without help. Assists and instructs others in repair. Serves as a key trouble-shooter for middleware and server.
  • 9. Develops and maintains security protocols with guidance from OIS.
  • 10. Reviews on a regular basis all aspects of laboratory auto verification system including routine audits of rules, documentation of all changes, review of new request/changes on weekly/monthly basis.
  • 11. Develops and maintains change control polices and documentation.
  • 12. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving skills; responds to problems in an immediate fashion; thoroughly investigates all aspects of the problem; responds to complaints in a timely fashion; demonstrates excellent customer service by always being courteous and responsive to a complaint.
  • 13. Ensures that the laboratory section complies with relevant items on the current CAP inspection checklist.
  • 14. Demonstrates knowledge of use of laboratory computer functions including downtime procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of general laboratory policies and procedures relating to middleware and LIS.
  • 15. Encourages and elicits feedback from staff on work process improvement. Maintains open communication with other members of the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
  • 16. Participates in staff meeting, including continuing education / professional enrichment, and prepares presentations as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION


Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or equivalent. MLS / MT(ASCP) certification or equivalent preferred.


EXPERIENCE


Three (3) to five (5) years in Laboratory Information Systems and/or experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory required.


LICENSURE


ASCP certification preferred.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Working knowledge and experience with instrumentation and equipment used in a clinical laboratory. Knowledge of laboratory information systems demonstrating the ability to learn the middleware software rule development and the ability to understand how changes affects all areas of the system and user workflows. Laboratory experience is preferred, not required.
