Description

Under general direction of the events and grounds manager, perform various tasks related to grounds and lawn maintenance, snow removal and deicing operations, event and conference set ups, and mailroom operations, following established policies and procedures. Complete semi-skilled maintenance and repairs on campus vehicles and grounds/snow removal and deicing equipment. The job involves physical effort in the operation of heavy vehicles and equipment such as snowplows, lawn care equipment and exposure to harsh working conditions. Employees are expected to have prior knowledge and experience to carry out assignments with minimal supervision.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform a variety of grounds related maintenance tasks such mowing, weeding, pruning, planting, tree trimming, and watering of grounds. Restore grounds during spring cleanup.
2. Pick up and dispose of trash and recyclables keeping the parking lots, roadways, sidewalks, lawns, and fields clear of litter, trash, and other debris.
3. Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including trucks, wheel loaders, tractors, forklifts, lawn mowers and utility vehicles performing various grounds related tasks including the transportation of college property.
4. Be part of a comprehensive snow removal and ice control plan and procedure. Operate snow removal equipment such as trucks, wheel loaders and tractors equipped with plows, brooms, and slat/brine spreaders. Shovel snow and spread salt on sidewalks and pavement as needed.
5. Provide minor maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles, grounds equipment and machinery including inspections, cleaning, and fueling.
6. Assist with capital grounds projects and installations in planters, planting beds, and landscaped areas on campus.
7. Assist with the inventory of grounds related supplies, tools, and equipment.
8. Set up and take down rooms, conference, and event spaces, for internal and external customers. Move, transport, set up, and straighten tables, chairs, stages, etc. for activities and events as requested. Collaborate with other departments within facilities, ITS, and security.
9. Maintain current professional and technical knowledge in the field through professional education and activities.
10. Occasionally sort incoming mail, interdepartmental mail, and packages by department and/or employee. Deliver large packages across campus. Operate mail machines including the postage meter and scale.
11. Check, lock, and unlock buildings and classrooms, set alarm and security system.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to effectively communicate to key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of and skill in all aspects of institutional grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Proficiency in the use of mobile phones, tablets, computers, and other electronic devices.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to read, understand, and work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license with acceptable driving record. Maintain driver's license and acceptable record through the course of employment at WCTC.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
  2. One year or any combination of education and work experience in a related field.
  3. Associate or technical degree or courses in horticulture, turf grass management or environmental sustainability preferred.
  4. Ideal candidate will have experience working in higher education, golf course, resort, or a hospitality environment.
Supplemental Information

The Groundskeeper is part of the Facilities department and will report to the Director of Facilities.

This position is full-time and benefit eligible.

Hours
Normal working hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Scheduled work hours are subject to change throughout the year to accommodate the various seasons. Must be available to work additional hours for events, maintenance, security, and emergency situations to meet the needs of the institution.
