What You'll Do:

Performs as a nursing assistant within the care management team under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. Performs delegated nursing tasks for which competence is demonstrated through the Care Partner skills checklist. Is oriented and regularly works in multiple patient care areas with diverse patient populations, staff and physicians. Floats primarily among the inpatient units; Floats to other areas as requested within scope of verified competencies.

How You'll Do It:

  • Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children's values and support our mission and vision.
  • Understands and satisfies the needs of the neonatal, infant, toddler, pre-school, school-age, adolescent and/or adult patient in regards to their growth and development process.
  • Performs delegated patient care activities under the direction of a registered nurse. Assists RN and/or physician with patient treatment/procedures as directed. (Patient care activities related to: hygiene, physical cares, intake/nutrition, elimination, ambulation/exercise, routine vital signs/monitoring, respiratory, comfort measures, basic safety procedures.)
  • Measures, documents and appropriately reports physiologic data (vital signs) and observations made of patients or families. Any deviations or changes are verbally reported to the RN and documented in the patient's medical record (co-signed by the RN).
  • Provides personal care to patients, such as feeding, toileting, bathing, positioning and ambulation.
  • Obtains and transports medications and hand delivers to the designated nurse or prescriber per the Medication-Administration policy.
  • Answers patient call lights, prepares patient rooms for admissions, changes bed linens, distributes/collects dietary trays and transports patients under the direction of the RN.
  • Maintains department supplies and equipment needed for patient care. Ensures equipment and supplies are stored and stocked appropriately. Cleans equipment and supplies after use. Reports any deficiencies or unsafe equipment to the RN or manager immediately.
  • Supports the unit environmental needs by maintaining cleanliness in the treatment room, isolation room, kitchen, patient care areas, supply area, and the department in general. Keeps patient food refrigerator and medication refrigerator clean and uncluttered.
  • Performs basic clerical and communication functions as needed within the unit (phone, order entry, patient inquiry, e-mail, voice-mail, etc.).

Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations at a level preferably acquired through completion of a high school education or equivalent.
  • Currently registered with the State of Wisconsin Registry for Nursing Assistants/Home Health Aides to be eligible for employment in the basic provider settings plus federally certified home health agencies and hospices. Certified Nursing Assistant certifications are not required to be renewed after hire.
  • Current CPR certification -Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required.

Schedule Details: .2 FTE (8 hours per week) every other Friday NOC shift 2300-0730

Unit Description: Surgical-Medical Pediatric Critical Care Unit is a 24-bed multispecialty intensive care unit. Nurses here care for the immediate postoperative needs of patients requiring intensive airway management and physiologic monitoring such as those recovering from neuro-surgical procedures, trauma, solid organ transplant, and other surgical procedures. In addition to the surgical population, a variety of medical patients are cared for including chronic needs patients and patients with tracheotomies requiring extensive teaching to be able to be discharged home. Due to the nature of the patients cared for on this unit, there is a high volume of admission, discharge and transfer activity. Nurses on West 4 are extremely skilled in a wide-variety of competencies from neurological dysfunction, solid organ transplantation, dialysis, respiratory ailments, and are able to care for patients with surgical/trauma needs, chronic conditions and much more.
