Job Description
Job Summary

To provide positive and reliable interaction with the young men and women that participates in Summer Stars. Also, to help create a positive environment where the players demonstrate sportsmanship, fundamental skills, teamwork and responsibility.

Position Summary
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Enforce all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • A working knowledge of the MPS policies, procedures, programs, and services.
  • Coaches are responsible for all duties related to their respective teams.
  • Coaches will be responsible for contacting their players to give league updates and game times.
  • Communicate effectively with participants/patrons and staff.
  • Be professional in the work place at all times.
  • Remain alert, free of distractions and diffuse situations before they escalate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to all Covid-19 policies and procedures.
Supervision Required

Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisors.

Job Requirements
  • Complete and clear a criminal background check.
  • Regular attendance at scheduled games, meetings and enrichment/mentor sessions.
  • Communicate league information to players and parents.
  • Notify the League Manager immediately in case of an emergency where you are unable to coach.
  • Notify the Site Supervisor 48 hours in advance for bus cancelations.
  • Coaches may be asked to coordinate with players for scheduled bus pick up.
  • Distribute and collect Registration Paperwork for Summer Stars Program.
  • Deliver registration paperwork to North Division prior to Summer Stars start date.
  • Required to attend Manditor Coaches meeting.
  • Ensure players arrive in their required Summer Stars uniform.
  • Be accessible by phone and email.
  • Abide by all league rules and officials decisions.
Preferred Experience
  • Have a strong desire to work with and mentor young men and young women in the community.
  • Previous professional experience facilitating small group activities and/or workshops.
  • Previous coaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships.
  • Ability to relate to and empathize with participants issues and deescalate conflicts.
  • Excellent decision making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to delegate job duties as needed.
Working Environment

This environment includes walking, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of young adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
