POSITION SUMMARY:

Voyager Space and Airbus have embarked on a transatlantic joint venture to design, build, and operate the Starlab commercial space station. Starlab will ensure a continued human presence in low-Earth orbit and a seamless transition of microgravity science and research from the International Space Station into the new commercial space station era. The Starlab Crew Support Systems (CSS) Engineers will play a key role in defining and designing an optimal environment control and life support system for Starlab.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Active role in development of Crew Support Systems (CSS) for Starlab including:

  • Comprehensive design of CSS elements, including: General habitability; Crew quarters (permanent and temporary); Hygiene provisions; On-board audio, camera, and video communications equipment; Food preparation and galley; Housekeeping equipment; Emergency equipment and Personal Protection Equipment; Waste and trash management; On-board stowage provision; Crew restraints and mobility aids; Maintenance and tools; Illumination (area and task lighting); On-board recreation and Entertainment
    • Familiarization of existing CSS rated documentation (Gateway, ISS, Columbus etc.)
    • Preliminary to detailed design evolution: including architecture, engineering budgets (power, data, mass, volume), and structural, thermal, electrical and data handling design, software implementation
    • Coordination with Starlab subsystems (thermal, power, electrical, ECLSS, payloads, etc.) to ensure design compatibility and interface definitions
    • Implementation of Starlab constraints into the CSS design process, such as mass, volume or power limitations and frequently changing baselines via continuous coordination with joint venture and internal stakeholders
    • Participation in Starlab emergency response concept definition
    • Integration of CSS into Starlab Crew and Payload operational concept definition
    • Independent advancement of CSS internal trade-offs and analyses in a highly dynamically changing environment
    • Initiation and steering of required simulations, task analysis, and cross-discipline analyses
    • Development of verification and validation (V&V) approach
    • Development of assembly, integration and test (AIT) approach
    • Development of operations concept, logistics and redundancy and spare approach
    • Gathering, understanding and implementation of detailed design information from suppliers on specific H/W and technologies into the overall CSS design (handling of export control, corporate proprietary and ITAR related data)
    • Assessment of technological solutions from assembly to system level (e.g. regarding development time, cost, technical readiness and interactions of the complete system)
  • CSS requirements engineering
    • Derivation of CSS-related requirements from Starlab program and system requirements
    • Screening of applicable standards and tailoring of documents to Starlab needs
    • Definition of system and subsystem requirements with related rationales, verification matrixes and allocations
    • Translation of cross-discipline needs into CSS requirements (e.g. from Safety, Human System Integration or Payloads)
    • Breakdown of requirements for dedicated specifications and requests for proposal to industry
  • Support to CSS Team Lead, Starlab project management, and Starlab chief engineering by
    • Collaborative interaction with CSS & Starlab team
    • Autonomous creation, tracking and resolution of action items
    • Maintaining and updating of risk register and opportunities
    • Maintaining and updating of schedule CSS-internally and in frame of larger integrated management schedule
    • Frequent travel to the US (Houston, Huntsville) and to Airbus DS sites (Friedrichshafen, Bremen)
    • Participation in frequent on-site meetings for workshops for agile problem solving
    • Handling of inputs and outputs and communication to multiple internal stakeholders such as other disciplines and joint venture partners
    • Handling of inputs and outputs and communication to multiple external stakeholders such as potential suppliers and customers

Qualified Experience / Skills / Training:

Education: Equivalency of Bachelor's degree (required) or Master's degree (preferred) in an applicable STEM field.


Experience: Minimum of 9 years total engineering experience (w/ Bachelors); minimum of 7 years total (w/ Masters); Equivalency of five years specific relevant experience in System definition and preliminary design of Crew Support Systems (CSS) for implementation on Starlab.


Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

  • Familiarity with existing Human Spaceflight Crew Support Systems elements to include General habitability, Crew quarters (permanent and temporary), Hygiene provisions, On-board audio, camera, and video communications equipment, Food preparation and galley, Housekeeping equipment, Emergency equipment and Personal Protection Equipment, Waste and trash management, On-board stowage provision, Crew restraints and mobility aids, Maintenance and tools, Illumination (area and task lighting), On-board recreation and Entertainment
  • Ability to coordinate CSS elements with Starlab subsystems (Thermal, Power, Electrical, ECLSS, Payloads, etc.)
  • Languages:
    • English: fluency in speech and writing is a MUST
    • German and further languages are beneficial
  • Tools:
    • Knowledge of Microsoft office environment is a MUST
    • Experience with CAD or simulation S/W is beneficial
    • Experience with MBSE tools (e.g. Cameo) is beneficial
    • Experience with Confluence is beneficial
    • Experience with requirements tools such as DOORS and JAMA is beneficial
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and with limited oversight in the given area of expertise.
  • Ability to manage a team that is comprised of contractors and key suppliers.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work while ensuring all assigned tasks progress.
  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to work late and/or long hours/weeks - not continuously, but when required to meet critical deadlines (due to inter-continental nature of program).
  • Fast and responsive adaption of stakeholder needs in changing environment from institutional to commercial customers (new ways of working).

Travel Required:

  • Frequent travel within the US (Houston TX, Huntsville AL, Denver CO, Arlington VA) and to Airbus DS facilities (Friedrichshafen & Bremen, Germany) may be required up to 40% of the time

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents.
  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment
  • Carrying: able to carry documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg
  • Lifting: able to lift documents, electronic equipment and/or supplies up to 40lbs/9kg.
  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to occasionally squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items shelved on bottom shelves
  • Standing: able to stand for long periods of time.
