INTRODUCTION:

The Racine Police Department serves the City of Racine in Southeastern Wisconsin with a population of 77,816 people. POSITION PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Records Specialist, assist in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of schoolchildren and the safe, orderly flow of vehicular traffic. These part-time duties are performed during the school year from late August to early June. Crossing Guards work under the general supervision of the Records Specialist.

Relief Crossing Guards must be able to report to work with very little notice to substitute for regular Crossing Guards, there is no guarantee of hours and shifts may vary.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Report to an assigned crossing, in uniform at the appointed time.
  • Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic at assigned crossing.
  • Give clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic.
  • Make sure signals are understood and obeyed before moving either vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
  • Ensure that children cross only at the proper location.
  • Prevent movement of vehicular traffic until all pedestrians have completely crossed the street.
  • Note any present or potential traffic hazards and report them to the Racine Police Department as soon as possible.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalency.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • After training by the Police Department, direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm, hand and whistle signals.
  • Must be available on short notice.
  • Must have transportation available to reach assigned corners, be punctual and reliable.

  • Stand for approximately 2 hours.
  • Speak English understandably.

  • Use specific vision abilities that are required by this position which includes; close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; must ambulate independently, manual dexterity required.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Random patrols of Police Officers, Traffic Investigators, Deputy Chief and Administrative Managers.
