Youth and Adult Sports Umpires oversee and umpire softball and/or baseball and soccer games for the Waukesha Park, Recreation and Forestry Department

Title: Youth and Adult Sports Umpire
Department: Parks, Recreation & Forestry
Reports to: Complex Supervisor and/or Sports Coordinator
Location: Youth: William R. Oliver Youth Complex (WRO) and/or Mindiola Adult: Saratoga and Buchner
Wages (Range):

  • Adult Softball, $30 per game
  • Youth Umpire/Official: Starting at $15.00 per game (rate depends on level)
Seasons:
  • Adult Softball: May - October
  • Youth Umpire: June - July
  • Youth Official: April - May and September - October

  • Study and understand all youth baseball, softball, t-ball rules, especially those special rules specific to WPRF leagues.
  • Study and understand all adult softball/kickball rules, USA Softball and WPRF leagues.
  • Study and understand all youth soccer rule, especially those special rules specific to WPRF leagues.
  • To arrive at ball field 15 minutes before the game.
  • Youth Umpires: Pick up scorecards, two balls, brush, clicker, pencil, helmets if needed, and be sure to have a watch. (3rd - 8th Grade Leagues)
  • Adult Umpires: Collect one new game ball from each team.
  • Youth Official: Pick up corner flags, line judge flags, assist with field set.
  • Youth and Adult Umpires: Meet with coaches and/or captains before game, clarify any questions, review ground rules, and introduce self to both coaches.
  • Youth Umpires (Baseball, and Softball only): Record scores each inning and checks with team score keepers, turn card into supervisor after game. Be sure to write clearly and sign card.
  • Adult Umpire: Make sure scorekeeper is ready to start game and check in during game for any issues.
  • Youth Umpire must wear WPRF T-shirt to each game, you will be given shirt at beginning of season. Adult Umpires: Collar Shirt in the color of light blue or navy. Shorts or pants in the color of black or blue. No jeans or sport shorts.
  • Beware of inclement weather, report for work unless you have confirmed that games have been cancelled.
  • You are required to work your assigned games unless you can find a replacement for yourself off the umpire roster.
  • First Aid supplies may be obtained from complex supervisor, supervisor would call 911 if needed.
  • Record all games worked on timecards at the complex, make sure you sign timecard.

  • Age Requirement: Youth Umpires Minimum age 14 yrs. old and Adult Umpires Minimum age18 yrs. old
  • Possess an interest in working with/instructing youth.
  • Ability to keep simple records and reports, and work from oral and written directions.
  • Possess a broad knowledge of sports.
  • Previous instructing, coaching and/or competitive playing preferred.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and tactfully with participants, parents, staff, city officials and the public.
  • Ability to present a positive image of the department and the City.
  • Able to meet the scheduling needs for this position
  • Access to reliable transportation
