The Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University is searching for a full-time speech-language pathologist to join the dynamic team of clinical faculty as an assistant clinical professor. The successful applicant will provide clinical care, supervise graduate students, and support research and educational missions of the Department's Center for Audiology, Speech, Language, and Learning and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The position will be housed in the Voice, Speech, Language Service, and Swallowing Center located at Northwestern University's downtown Chicago medical campus in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Cancer Center provides specialized care to inpatients and outpatients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and serves as an exceptional educational setting for graduate students. The Center has strong partnerships with world-renowned research scientists housed within the Northwestern University Communication and Sciences Disorders Department and the Feinberg School of Medicine. Candidates must have extensive experience in evaluating and managing speech and swallowing disorders related to head and neck cancer.

Employment term: One (1) year appointment beginning January 1, 2024, renewable on an annual basis.

Qualifications:

• Earned Master's, SLPD, or Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology, as well as an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
• Extensive clinical experience in the management of speech, voice, and swallowing disorders in the head and neck cancer population, with specific proficiency in the areas of:
  • Laryngectomy (artificial larynx, TEP management, esophageal speech)
  • Post-surgical and post-radiation dysphagia
  • Tracheostomy, speaking valves
• Proficiency in conducting and interpreting Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS)

Duties:

• Provide exceptional, evidence-based diagnosis and treatment for patients with head and neck cancer treatment in an acute-care hospital and outpatient multidisciplinary otolaryngology head and neck cancer clinic setting.
• Build and maintain a full caseload of head and neck outpatients.
• Coordinate with inpatient SLP team to provide seamless care for inpatients with head and neck cancer.
• Perform and interpret diagnostic swallow examinations via Modified Barium Swallow Studies and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing.
• Collaborate with head and neck surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, and researchers on the Chicago and Evanston campuses.
• Participate in research for funded and non-funded research projects, with a primary emphasis on head and neck cancer.
• Attend weekly tumor board to identify patient needs and potential research subjects.
• Maintain a database of head and neck cancer patients who meet the eligibility criteria for ongoing research projects.
• Attend weekly progress meetings with the research study team.
• Develop the clinical skills of graduate students via direct instruction and supervision within a team-based educational model
• Assist in student advising and other activities related to student development.
• Participate in professional activities and service to the University, community, and the profession.
