As the Design Manager, you will manage selected system wide planning and design services within the Planning and Design Division. Responsible for quality assurance for planning and design activities associated with selected Strategic Capital Construction projects and selected Discretionary Capital projects. Works independently, reviewing work progress with leadership. In association with Advocate Aurora's planning and design projects, the position will be directly responsible for customer education, buy-in and ownership when leading site specific planning and design projects - requiring a significant degree of finesse and business acumen.

This is a remote first position with travel to the assigned territory in Wisconsin as needed.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develops structure and directs daily operations for a comprehensive real estate services program by providing procedures, policies and tools for managing Advocate Aurora real estate. Thereby enabling sound decision making as to lease/ buy/ sell opportunities, lease management, real estate financial analysis and due diligence in addition to conducting strategic planning and evaluation of the entire Advocate Aurora real estate portfolio and presenting recommendations in advance of lease expirations.

  • Manages projects for new construction, renovation and remodeling projects, facility planning, programming, project budgets and schedules development assistance (in collaboration with department directors), legal agreements and contracts, architectural/engineering planning and design, project management (including consultant and vendor management), code compliance and wayfinding/signage planning.

  • Participates in team selection, fee negotiation where applicable, definition of the program, Certificate of Need support, assists in the development and review of drawings and specifications, assist in development of budgets and schedules in conjunction with the finance and construction team, interface with IDPH, compliance with codes and regulations, periodically inspect work in progress, and oversee preparation and completion of design punch list.

  • Works with project teams to assure success in developing detailed schedules for planning and design; collaborate with department regarding overall project schedule and work plans to achieve Proforma targets. Supplements construction and finance teams in assisting contractors in the preparation of construction cost estimates at milestones in the design phase such as schematic design and design development.

  • Participates in the creation and structuring of the new system-wide Planning and Design Division including direct responsibility for a number of aspects associated with service-line improvements, product development, process improvement strategies, knowledge-based development, quality control measures and customer relations mechanisms and strategies.

  • Lead project specific LEAN operations improvements processes (clinical and/or functional) to be undertaken prior to the planning design of all Advocate Aurora projects. Undertakes outcomes based goals and objectives and scoring criteria to assure support of Advocate Aurora corporate objectives for planning and design projects.

  • Performs industry-based research and collaborates with national healthcare providers, architects, contractors and other government, regulatory and business entities in an effort to assure a best practice approach to Advocate Aurora Planning and Design services for direct application in Advocate Aurora environment.

  • Structures and oversees collaborative cross-service line work efforts and task forces to include Supply Chain, IS and other relevant ancillary support services for specific projects.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • None Required.


Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, or

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design or related field.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 7 years of experience in consulting, planning, construction, real estate, engineering, architecture related area with emphasis in hospital planning and design.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Expertise in healthcare planning and design.

  • Financial skills.

  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Team building skills.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.

  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
