Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. This opportunity will allow the APP to use a strong evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care in Menomonee Falls and West Bend, WI at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital and Froedtert West Bend.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team who will contribute to excellence in program administration, patient care, patient safety, research, quality improvement, and teaching.

The Ideal Candidate will have collegiality, adaptability, and strong communication skills, wanting to be part of a thriving and very collaborative academic practice at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to providing direct patient care in Ortho Trauma in the outpatient, inpatient, and OR settings.

In this role you will:

  1. Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring Orthopaedic intervention in blended environment as a member of the Orthopaedic Surgery department.
  2. Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  3. Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  4. Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Orthopaedic Community Trauma services.
  5. Facilitates and communicates with patient, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  6. Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  7. Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  8. Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.
  9. Work directly with the on-call physician to manage inpatient consultations and outpatient, non-surgical fractures.
  10. Actively participate in Orthopaedic surgeries, providing surgical assistance to the attending surgeon, including surgical wound closure.
  11. Assist with pre-operative and post-operative patient care, including posting surgical cases, consenting patients for surgery, placing pre-operative orders and post-operative orders
  12. Respond to pages regarding Orthopaedic patient consults, nurse triage calls, calls from the ED and floor
  13. Collaborate with the attending surgeon to assess and manage acute cases in a timely and efficient manner.
  14. Perform in-person Orthopaedic surgery consults in the ED or floor. Perform specialized skills such as splinting, joint reduction, fracture reduction, and joint aspiration.
  15. Answer nurse triage pages, providing guidance and support to the nursing staff in assessing patient care needs.

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Position Requirements:

Preferred Experience: Previous Orthopaedic experience preferred; zero years of experience required.

*You will be trained to be able to take first call for community emergency room consultations. The on-call physicians will work with you in a direct oversight role to aid in decision making and management planning of patients.

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Wisconsin RN License Certification by NCCPA
