SummaryDevelop and produce steel designs and contract documents for new and retrofit building/structural projects including, but not limited to, schools, offices, sporting facilities, hospitals, and medical office buildings.

Job Responsibilities & Requirements

Under the direction of the Director of Engineering and/or Project Manager, the Project Engineer III will be responsible for the following, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical assistance to the Engineering Department on project specific designs, RFI's, and unique details.
  • Formally respond to questions from jurisdictional agencies during the permitting and construction phases of a project.
  • Oversee technical changes to engineering standard notes and details.
  • Research building codes and jurisdictional approval processes that are relevant to SidePlate's business.
  • Test and report the accuracy, behavior, and results of developments in other software platforms (i.e. RAM, ETABS, TEKLA, SDS2, etc.
  • Ability to manage and execute as SidePlate project from start to finish with confidence, while using intellectual property and time saving software/tools effectively.
  • Calculate cost and determine financial feasibility of project based on analysis of collected data.
  • Conduct field visits to observe SidePlate connection fabrication and erection. Participate in writing required observation report(s).
  • Create computer models using preliminary drawings and/or design criteria.
  • Develop and draw by hand project design details for construction.
  • Develop gravity and lateral frame solutions.
  • Produce safe and efficient structural engineering solutions.
  • Prepare structural calculations and drawings for submission to Engineers of Record and Authorities having Jurisdiction.
  • Review shop drawings and requests for information (RFI's).
  • Review, evaluate and correct structural computer models provided to SidePlate by Engineer of Record, as required.
  • Set up and present pre-detailing, pre-fabrication, and pre-erection meetings to ensure conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction standards.
  • Train Design Engineers on how to perform their essential duties and lead by example.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, MS degree preferred.
  • Excellent understanding of software and code.
  • Excellent understanding of statics, dynamics and structural load path.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in structural engineering.
  • Engineer with 3-5 years will be considered for project engineer II positions.

Computer Skills:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office and have proficient skills in Word, Excel, Access, as well as various structural engineering and fabrication software platforms, including RAM, ETABS, SAP, TEKLA, and SDS2.

Other Requirements:

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Licensed as a Professional Engineer in California. If the individual is subject to license requirements or professional development hours as stipulated by a state agency now or in the future, compliance is required.
  • Meets all requirements to maintain licensure in good standing (or the ability to acquire reciprocity within two (2) calendar years following hire date).
  • May travel up to 20% of the total work time, internally as required, to fabricator shops, to conventions, and project jobsites as necessary.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret applicable building codes, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical publications, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as calculus, algebraic formulas, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, and ratios.
