Internal combustion engines are alive and charging at Generac Power Systems. We use them as the heart of our generators to provide safe, reliable electric power to homes, businesses, and cities. Our small, dedicated Engine Development Group develops the entire engine and works on everything engine related.


The Engine Development Manager is responsible for all engineering development including new product introductions, cost reduction, technology/research, and lifecycle product support. This position requires excellent engineering and engine knowledge coupled with superior people leadership skills, proficiency in quality systems, functional and program management experience, and project planning expertise.


Working closely with business groups and functional leaders (Service, Operations, Supply Chain, Product Engineering), this position will also be responsible for providing executive leadership and management of the residential and industrial/commercial engine development with a focus on timely and quality engine project delivery.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Ability to provide engineering leadership and design oversight functions for current and new product development projects including creating and maintaining development schedules, executing product development plans (schedule, product cost, resources to complete project, quality targets, product specification adherence, and validation test plans, etc.)
  • Ability to foster collaboration between engineering, sales, operations, finance, and other departments.
  • Ability to identify and harvest new engine technologies, techniques, standards and procedures.
  • Ability to translate technical information to all audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize complex and advanced designs for manufacturability.
  • Ability to support product development plans (schedule, product cost, meeting design inputs).
  • History of designs, validation, specifying design requirement, and bringing new products to market.
  • History of development testing, system integration of complex components, component/system cost (including cost/benefit analysis), engine reliability (risk analysis), and safety.
  • History of managing expenses, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting corporate goals (e.g. revenue growth, profitability, market penetration, quality).
  • Create and maintain an organizational culture which encourages innovation, collaboration, a sense of urgency toward goals, and continuous improvement.
  • Designs and directs the work of the Engine Group by selecting, coaching, and developing team members. Sets clear expectations, manages performance (recognizing achievement, providing feedback and administering progressive discipline).
  • Act as an intellectual/technical resource for the Engine and other groups.
  • Engage in business planning processes, recruitment, retention, talent acquisition, and development.
  • Travel to other Generac facilities as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience.
  • 5 years of management experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with engine operation, basic physics, engine fuel, ignition, intake, exhaust, and turbo system design and development.
  • Experience in new product design and development.
  • Experience in issue resolution and problem solving.
  • Experience in applying engineering knowledge and improving products, services, and processes.
  • Understanding of internal combustion engine thermodynamic cycles and fluid dynamics.
  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy on multiple projects.
  • Design experience with a variety of materials (i.e., plastics, aluminum castings, sheet metal) and basic knowledge of material specs and use.
  • Previous experience with SAP or equivalent ERP.
  • Experience sitting on a regulatory committee in a technical role.
  • Strong written communication and presentation skills.
  • Applies engineering knowledge and experience to improve products, services, and processes.
  • Experience with machine design, material specifications, and bills of materials.
  • Familiarity with SAP.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
