SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

From hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to barbecue sauce and pancake syrup, Silgan Plastics manufactures packaging solutions to help our customers deliver their products to consumers in an attractive and safe way.

As a key member of the Corporate Accounting Department, the Tax Manager will be a key contributor managing the tax function at Silgan Plastics, providing guidance and support across the business, and interfacing with the Holding Company Tax Department. This role will work closely with the Holding Company Tax Department to support US Federal & State and Canadian income tax compliance as it relates to Silgan Plastics, and to develop and implement strategies to minimize risk and maximize opportunities. Additionally, the role will provide sales and use tax oversight to our manufacturing and administrative locations, as well as oversee all aspects of Personal Property & Real Estate Taxes including engaging and directing external consultants on accounting & compliance and collaborating on strategies to reduce tax exposure.

These responsibilities require a firm grasp of tax regulations and theory, attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • US Federal and State Income Tax Compliance. Prepare US Federal and State Income Tax returns, calculate and record the monthly income tax accrual, and other periodic adjustments in collaboration with the Holding Company.
  • Lead the computations of the quarterly, and year-end income tax provisions.
  • Collaborate closely with internal Silgan Plastics and Holding Company teams to examine activities and tax consequences across the corporation's U.S. and Canadian locations.
  • Act as a liaison between Silgan Plastics and the Holding Company Tax Department, external tax consultants, or taxing authorities as needed to support the preparation of the corporation's domestic and international income tax returns, transfer pricing studies, audits, inquiries, and tax related projects.
  • Determine accounting treatment under ASC 740 and document analysis.
  • Participate in tax process optimization, develop and implement procedural changes and/or processes to improve the tax function.
  • Identify areas of potential tax risks or opportunities and develop strategies to mitigate those risks or capitalize on the opportunities.
  • Outsource property tax compliance to an external consultant. Leverage the team and systems to gather and send necessary data to ensure compliance and reporting.
  • Drive cost savings through property tax abatement and provide property tax quarterly forecasts & annual budgets.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Finance to develop and implement strategies, and work with external consultants, to actively manage assets reduce property tax exposure.
  • Monitor compliance and provide guidance for Sales & Use Tax and GST filings completed by plant personnel.
  • Prepare account reconciliations for tax related balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintain appropriate sales tax exemptions.
  • Assist in preparing tax models and tax implications of other ad hoc scenario analyses.

AUTHORITY LEVEL (if applicable):

EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting

Preferred: Master's Degree in Taxation

EXPERIENCE:

Required: 4 - 7 years of related U.S. tax experience in public accounting or 8 - 10 years in industry

Preferred: Canadian or other International tax experience

SKILLS:

Required:

  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite experience specifically Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Professionalism: Strong time management skills and delivers on commitments. Treats others with respect and collaborates with peers to achieve objectives.
  • Problem Solving & Analytical Skills: Gathers, interprets and evaluates data from a variety of sources for the purpose of problem solving and strategy development.
  • Technical Skills: Stays abreast of developments and legislation impacting corporate tax obligations.

The Following Skills would be a Plus:

  • Proficiency with OneSource Income Tax and Tax Provision software
  • Proficiency in Oracle ERP or comparable system
