Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages the operations of the Long Term Care(LTC) Underwriting Division through the recruitment, selection, training, development, motivation, and salary administration of underwriter staff oversees/coordinates division workflow.

  • Manages large scale LTC and other company/corporate projects, customer service initiatives, and workflow design efforts.

  • Ensures customer centered communication focus with the Network and serves as communication liaison/resource providing technical problem resolution with field management, financial representatives, company management, other companies and insurance departments regarding underwriting concerns and issues.

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the LTC Underwriting Team maintaining departmental service standards and objectives with favorable morbidity experience and persistency at the lowest possible net cost.

  • Supervises and directs the work activities and risk analysis of a high level professional/technical staff ranging from level P1 Specialist to level P3 Consultant.

  • Performs all aspects of performance management and career development including compliance with NM's Affirmative Action programs and EEO law and regulations.

  • Responsible for the development of all levels of underwriters through the referral process, individual instruction, case audits, and classroom instruction.

  • Coordinates and implements new underwriting guidelines, practices, and procedures.

  • Coordinates and leads major systems and process improvement initiatives in the LTC Department.

  • Provides leadership to all aspects of these systems and process improvements including workflow, process changes, and systems development initiatives.

  • Acts as a liaison to other insurance operations departments when implementing initiatives.

  • Develops, implements, and monitors customer service standards for the Network. Initiates communication to address and resolve technical problems with field management.

  • Responds to complex/sensitive customer service complaints and questions in compliance with the National Association of Insurance Commission guidelines.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Advanced degree and progressively responsible work experience emphasizing decision making, team building, communication, and personal development.

  • A minimum of five years of experience in insurance operations with knowledge of risk selection concepts and insurance practices.

  • Knowledge of underwriting preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service intervention resulting in successful technical problem resolution.

  • Strong interest in people development with demonstrated leadership and decision making skills.

  • Experience in supervision desirable.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the proven ability to successfully negotiate problem resolutions with the field force, policyowners, and employees.

  • Superior organizational and leadership skills demonstrated by proven experience in managing projects, systems, and/or processes.

  • Demonstrated project management experience with the ability to lead operation change initiatives.

  • Exceptional demonstration of skills leading people and building teams.

  • Minimum of seven years of operational experience preferred. Experience may include people management experience, Lead Underwriter Consultant, training development of underwriters at all levels resulting in performance improvements.

  • Previous underwriting experience preferred.

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$89,040.00

Pay Range - End:

$165,360.00

N ort hwester n Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.
