Generac Power Systems is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineering Leader to drive the qualification of electronics components for our Energy Technology products. This engineer will lead a team of Electrical Engineers to qualify electronic components for design robustness and reliability based on its application. This leader is expected to be proficient in various physics-based component failure mechanisms based on its application. The position requires excellent technical engineering knowledge coupled with solid people leadership, validation experience, and organizational skill. This leader will interface with a diverse team of engineers spread throughout North America.

The ideal candidate will work a hybrid schedule out of the Waukesha, WI and report to the Director of Engineering, with possibility of Remote option.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assume the role of Subject Matter Expert for electronic and electromechanical components in high reliability power electronic applications.
  • Develop and implement test plans to validate the performance and durability of new or alternate electronic and electromechanical components.
  • Collaborate and guide failure analysis methodologies and lead component level root cause identification initiatives.
  • Provide engineering leadership and oversight for product validation including developing component level test procedures, procuring resources and equipment, implementing tests, and trouble-shooting complex issues.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing partners and other engineering stakeholders to optimize product designs for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Develop productive relationships with electronic component suppliers and distributors.
  • Provide engineering leadership and design oversight for the creation and implementation of component level design changes that will improve robustness, manufacturability, reliability, serviceability and eliminate unnecessary cost and complexity.
  • Create and implement component qualification DFR matrices and evaluation procedures.
  • Create and maintain a team culture which encourages innovation, collaboration, excitement/commitment, and a sense of urgency toward goals, and continuous improvement.
  • Challenge team members to question the status quo and ensure that all aspects of the validation, design, development, and support processes are optimal for the application.
  • Organize and direct the work of the team. Select, coach, and develop staff. Set clear expectations to inspire and motivate the team. Manages performance-- recognizing achievement, providing feedback, and administering progressive discipline when necessary.
  • Develop engineering talent, identifying training and growth plans for employees.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 12 years of engineering experience, preferably in a Solar, industrial / commercial products environment
  • 8 years of experience in electronic component selection, application, validation and failure analysis.
  • 5 years of mentorship and/or management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results while working on multiple global projects simultaneously, balancing resources, timing and the quality of outcomes.
  • Experience with the design and development of power electronics/power converters
  • Experience with solar, energy storage, or other clean energy technologies
  • Experience with Altium or similar schematic capture and PCB Layout
  • Experience supporting NRTL certification testing (e.g. UL, Intertek, TUV, etc.)
  • Experience managing engineering changes and supporting a production environment.
  • Experience evaluating corrective and preventative actions to address quality issues
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical engineering theory and principles
  • Thorough knowledge of Physics based component failure modes and evaluation methodologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of electronic and electromechanical components and its applications
  • Experience creating and implementing component qualification and validation plans.
  • Knowledge of Printed Circuit Board layout best practices
  • Deep familiarity and experience with high-volume manufacturing of electronics products, including mixed surface mount/through-hole PCBs and electromechanical assembly.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job include are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision, and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel, including internationally.
