Under general supervision of the Coordinator of Tutoring Services & Academic Support, and with the support of Educational Assistants-Academic Support, primary duties involve helping students with their academic studies in an effort to improve student retention and completion of MATC courses in bilingual, various subjects.

Tutors work up to 19 hours per week and may be funded through grant monies that have been allocated to the Tutoring Services & Academic Support budget.

Tutors have the important task of helping students succeed in their coursework while pursuing their careers. Tutors also have the opportunity to develop employment skills, establish job references, and attain tutoring credentials within a professional academic environment.

Tutors receive formal training in the principles and skills of adult education. With training and experience, tutors can earn internationally-recognized certifications through MATC and the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Tutors in walk-in situations, classes and/or small groups as assigned.
  • Attends all class periods of any courses to which they are assigned and may be asked to provide additional tutoring outside of class.
  • Adapts tutoring style to meet students' needs and learning styles; determines appropriate tutoring methods for students.
  • Reads textbooks, handouts and other educational materials and learns relevant software/applications.
  • Calls in ahead of time if late to work or needing to cancel a tutoring session.
  • Uses data-tracking systems to log work hours and student visits.
  • Carries employee ID and uses signage for identification during working times.
  • Maintains regular communication with staff via email.
  • Attends training and applies learned skills.
  • Represents Tutoring Services & Academic Support in the college community.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average overall
  • Minimum B grade in the specific course or in program courses to which assigned.
In addition, tutors must have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to include the following:

1. Ability to work with minimal supervision using organizational and customer-service skills.
2. Ability to work with students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
4. Ability to understand and support the student-teacher relationship.
5. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
6. Flexibility to work during hours that centers are operating and students are available.
7. Willingness to show up on time as scheduled and be attentive to student needs.
8. Proficiency in computer operations.
9. Bilingual skills desired (specify which language in application).
