Old Republic Surety Company (ORSC) is currently seeking an Assistant Underwriter-Contract to join its Underwriting Support Team at our Home Office branch located in Brookfield, WI.  ORSC ranks among the nation's top underwriters of contractors' performance and payment bonds, miscellaneous surety, and commercial fidelity, offering thousands of types of bonds. In general, the Assistant Underwriter-Contract performs a variety of administrative duties to support Branch and Home Office Underwriting operations. This position assists in the underwriting of contract bond requests, orders credit reports on new submissions, enters financials and ensures completion on bank references. 

Essential duties for the role are as follows:
  • Enter bid bond requests and complete Contract Bond Requests (CBRs). Follow up with agent for any out of line items or missing information. Obtain approvals from Home Office or underwriter. Enter new bond submissions into computer profile. Follow up with agent for missing information.
  • Order credit reports on new submissions and on an annual basis. Review and report any deficiencies to underwriter. Enter financials and results into the computer profile. Update profile as new information is received.
  • Send out references, including bank references. Ensure completion and report any deficiencies. Develop referencing information independent of contractor questionnaire.
  • Prepare and send out General Indemnity Agreements. Follow-up for completion. Load contractor work in progress schedules into computer system.
  • Obtain, complete and send out statuses on accounts. Maintain a suspense system and keep the underwriter or Senior Assistant Underwriter up to date.
  • Assist Home Office with accounting discrepancies and past due accounts. Review direct bill past due list monthly and contact principal and agent on late pays.
  • Provide Home Office Claims with claim notices along with appropriate bond information and assist with information requests.
  • Perform administrative duties including typing correspondence and miscellaneous documents, handling mail, assisting callers, filing, photocopying, faxing, ordering supplies, and using/maintaining office equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned. 
This position requires a High School diploma, or equivalent, and a minimum of one year related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working as an Assistant Underwriter-Contract requires one to work independently and effectively within a fast-paced environment.  Proficiency with Microsoft (MS) Windows and Office products is necessary.  Other skills necessary include excellent oral and written communication skills, strong organizational and accurate proofreading skills, the ability to maintain accurate records, the ability to exercise discretion with confidential information, strong attention to detail, and the ability to use a variety of office equipment.
