In partnership with donors and community leaders, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations is responsible for meeting the strategic philanthropic priorities of MCW and the Froedtert Hospital Foundation. Together, MCW and Froedtert Hospital are engaged in philanthropic initiatives addressing our most urgent priorities: Accelerating Research and Advancing Patient Care, Driving Health and Vitality with Our Community, Transforming Healthcare Education, and Leading the Way in Surgery and Cardiovascular Research and Care. The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is where a diverse group of thought leaders in science, medicine, education and community engagement work together to build a healthier future. More than 1,400 students are enrolled in MCW's medical school and graduate school programs in Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Central Wisconsin. MCW's School of Pharmacy opened in 2017. A major national research center, MCW is the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and second largest in Wisconsin. In FY2020, faculty received more than $300 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Annually, MCW faculty direct or collaborate on more than 2,800 research studies, including clinical trials. Additionally, more than 1,600 physicians provide care in virtually every specialty of medicine for more than 500,000 patients annually.

Froedtert Hospital, the primary adult teaching affiliate for the Medical College of Wisconsin, is a 689-bed academic medical center that delivers advanced medical care. Froedtert Hospital is nationally recognized for exceptional physicians and nurses, research leadership, specialty expertise and state-of-the-art treatments and technology. Froedtert serves as Eastern Wisconsin's referral center for advanced medical practice care 37 specialties and is a major training facility with more than 1,000 medical, nursing and health technical students in training.

In partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin, Froedtert is also a respected research facility with annually more than 2,000 research studies, including clinical trials. Froedtert Hospital operates the region's only adult Level 1 Trauma Center.

The mission of the MCW Cancer Center is to reduce the cancer burden through outreach, education and research into the causes, prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. We do this by integrating basic science, translational and clinical research, patient care and professional and community education, with an emphasis on engaging underserved populations. Our network of cancer experts, scientists, clinicians, research programs and shared resources connects the collective cancer effort at the Medical College of Wisconsin and throughout the region. This essential hub provides leadership, knowledge, support and resources to hundreds of cancer investigators and clinicians. We provide a complete, centralized, single-minded focus on cancer research, from the bench to the bedside to the community. As the only center of its type in our region, we provide patients with multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art treatment, research-driven care and early phase clinical trials, right here in eastern Wisconsin.


  • Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, provides leadership and direction to secure new and increased support from grateful patients, community influencers and friends of the institutions. Working in concert with key clinicians, researchers, and administrators responsible for elevating the reputation and prominence of Froedtert & MCW. Goal is to identify, cultivate and solicit donors for major gift commitments, securing philanthropic support for research, education and patient care initiatives supporting Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
  • Understand the mission and philanthropic priorities of Froedtert Hospital, Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of Wisconsin and works collaboratively across the organizations and departments to build on our collective success. Comprehensive understanding of the strategic clinical and research, education, alumni relations and patient care priorities, as well as specific clinical department priorities and needs.
  • Build and strategically steward and manage a portfolio of prospects and donors with capacity to contribute major gifts.
  • Develop giving opportunities aligned to donor interests and the strategic priorities of Froedtert Hospital, Froedtert Hospital Foundation and the Medical College of WI. Creatively develop and implement innovative strategies for the successful solicitation of gifts.
  • Working with the Prospect Research team, assess prospects, develop and execute strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of prospects to achieve individual and departmental goals.
  • Ability to raise donor sights, articulate aspirational goals and ideas, set priorities, present philanthropic opportunities and close gifts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with boards, clinical department leaders, faculty, staff, and volunteers associated with his/her portfolios/programs; meet with colleagues across campus to coordinate and execute strategies, utilizing experience and knowledge to build consensus.
  • Make persuasive verbal and written cases for supporting these key priorities, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific projects and programs needing support and ensure effective stewardship of donor relationships.
  • Understanding of the complex principles and techniques associated with planned giving and estate gifts; work collaboratively with Planned Giving colleagues to close planned gifts.
  • Participate in advancement activities and events, including dinners, receptions, and other philanthropic initiatives.
  • Responsibility for continual review and overall accuracy of his/her portfolio in database software. Record proposals and actions about prospects and donors in a timely fashion in database.
  • Accountable to annual individual performance goal metrics as well as strategic goals and objectives of department.
  • Prepare and work within division budget and monitor resources and expenditures under span of control.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Bachelor's Degree

  • 4 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful professional fundraising experience and a proven track record of closing five and six-figure gifts in a complex organization.
  • Preferred Experience: Philanthropy in a health care, academic or foundation setting
  • Organized professional with entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and resourcefulness.

  • Superior interpersonal and collaborative relationship skills, with demonstrated verbal presentation experience and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work across a complex organization and provide highly visible inspired leadership. Professional credibility and decision-making integrity to gain trust of key constituents and leaders. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all constituencies, fostering inclusiveness and diversity of ideas.
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced deadline-oriented team environment. Ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a complex environment and embrace challenges.
  • Demonstrated analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. Experience with fundraising database software and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • A highly developed ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information related to both alumni and donors, as well as employees.
