Position: In-home support staff for young adults with a TBI
Location: New Berlin, WI

Our goal is to foster the independence of a young man with a TBI who lives in his own apartment. This young man is very intelligent, social and active. We are looking for professional life assistants who are outgoing, dedicated and driven to make a positive impact in his sustainable independence. Ideally, the professionals we seek have a passion for working with people with disabilities or are pursuing a career in the therapy field.
 
In his own words:
My name is Michael and I have a traumatic brain injury. I live in my own apartment in New Berlin, Wisconsin. I am able to do this due to the IRIS program. IRIS provides me a budget that allows me to interview and hire support staff. Support staff are there to help me to gain the skills to be as independent as possible in things like: transferring, preparing food, planning meals, getting dressed, and personal cares. Support staff also work with me on things like: community activities and relationships, furthering my education, exercise, volunteer opportunities, AA meetings, church, and getting me to appointments.


An ideal support staff has the following abilities:
Has a reliable vehicle that can transport him and his wheelchair and proof of insurance for any shift scheduled
Has patience and is willing to accept feedback (training provided)
Has the ability to work 2-6 shifts per week (shifts are 3-5hrs in length)
Has the ability to assist me with transferring in and out of my wheelchair
Has the ability to make at least a 6 month commitment to my recovery
Has at least some flexibility to step in for others on my team when someone needs time off
Has a working knowledge of Google calendar, Google drive, and smartphone technology
Has had some experience working with and understanding people with TBI’s
Has a working knowledge of "Range of Motion" and can follow a plan of physical therapy.
Has ability to check and respond to work related emails on a daily basis
Has access to a cell phone to keep during any shift scheduled
 

 
Requirements:
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities (preferably TBI): 1 year
  • High school graduate
  • Non-smoker
