About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for a Staff Archaeologist to join our Sheridan, Wyoming team. Our team of accomplished environmental and cultural resources scientists is growing, and we are looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality, cultural resources work.

This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt opportunity reporting to our Sheridan, Wyoming office. We would be willing to consider a distributed candidate from states in our North region (Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Dakotas) with a preference for Wyoming or Montana-based staff.

Under the supervision of a Cultural Resources Lead, this position will perform office and field tasks. Office tasks include preparation of cultural resource forms and technical reports. Field tasks include a variety of activities during survey, site recording, site testing, monitoring, or excavation projects. For overnight field efforts, SWCA provides single-occupancy hotel rooms and standard GSA per diem for meals and incidental expenses. Overtime rates are applied for work exceeding 40 hours a week. During field season (June - October) this position witll require heavy travel from 75%- 90%.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist with office-based tasks, including laboratory work, performing literature reviews, research, site form preparation, and technical report preparation, as needed
  • Communicate effectively when reporting to Project Archaeologists, Principal Investigators, clients, and client representatives in the field to facilitate successful project planning and logistics
  • Ensure that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are ready for fieldwork
  • Accurately identify and record historic-era and pre-contact artifacts and features, and mentor less-experienced field crew in their identification.
  • Provide support to field directors by assisting in directing field technicians in fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, and monitoring, while ensuring quality and completeness of data collected, including:
    • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery
    • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely
    • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
  • For Staff Archaeologist, responsibilities include:
    • Supervise a small crew while conducting environmental fieldwork.
    • Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
    • Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
    • Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
    • Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field.
    • Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Required
    • A bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field and experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and/or monitoring.
    • Two (2) years of experience conducting a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, methodology and/or monitoring.
    • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.
    • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Preferred
    • An accredited Field School Certification
    • Proximity (within four hours) to the Sheridan, Wyoming office.

An employee in this Sheridan, WY position can expect a rate of $23.25- $29.75/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
