Position Description

Postdoctoral Research Associate Quantum Materials Job ID JR101145 Date posted 04/30/2024

The Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) provides world-class capabilities for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS), offering ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (200 eV - 2000 eV), full momentum control and novel opportunities for the sample environment. The main goal of the SIX Beamline, which has been open for users since 2019, is to investigate the complex physics of quantum materials. The SIX Beamline Team focuses on the study of magnetic and electronic excitations in novel materials and unconventional superconductors, devices under operating conditions, laser-pumped metastable states, single photon emission, etc.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to perform Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (RIXS), photo-luminescence, and pump-and-probe experiments on materials displaying quantum emission (see recent publication https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-024-01866-4). Besides conventional ultrahigh resolution RIXS, the project involves the coupling of an ultrafast laser with RIXS to investigate the behavior of quantum emitters under ultrafast electromagnetic stimuli. This position is a close collaboration between the PI J. Pelliciari (pelliciari@bnl.gov) and the group of Prof. G. Grosso at CUNY.
The results will be interpreted in an interdisciplinary environment involving both experimentalists and theorists.

Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Perform Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering synchrotron experiments on materials displaying single photon emission
* Perform photo-luminescence and pump-and-probe spectroscopy at BNL's Center for Functional Nanomaterials and at CUNY
* Contribute to the development of laser-pumped RIXS techniques (already present at the NSLS-II SIX beamline) to perform experiments on materials displaying quantum emitters
* Develop advanced architectures of hBN thin flakes (twisted and heterostructures) using the Quantum Press at BNL's Center for Functional Nanomaterials to be used for RIXS experiments at NSLS-II.
* Report scientific results in academic papers and talks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* PhD. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Photonics or related field of research awarded within the last 5 years or will have completed all PhD. requirements by the commencement of employment.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as a part of a multi-institutional team.
* Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, and technical staff
* A good understanding of the physics of quantum materials and 2D materials
* Demonstrated data analysis skills
* Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Experience in synchrotron-based soft X-ray techniques, ultra-high vacuum instrumentation, optical spectroscopy and/or pump and probe techniques
* Experience in X-ray absorption (XAS) and scattering techniques, such as x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.
* Experience with lab-standard sample preparation and characterization techniques including transport, single crystal diffraction, and optical spectroscopy,
* Experience in femtosecond laser operation and laser pumping experiments.
* Experience in quantum emission and photonics
* Good programming skills in Python or similar languages

Other Information:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 - $116200 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
  • Position is on-site
